Providence Health & Services Chief Philanthropy Officer, St. Mary Foundation in Walla Walla, Washington



The Chief Philanthropy Officer at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, WA leads the planning and implantation of all fundraising activities for the St. Mary Foundation. Plans, coordinates and assures implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization. Assures development and maintenance of appropriate systems for fund development, including but not limited to: major and planned gifts, annual giving, marketing, public/donor relations, grant writing, gift processing and recognition, administrative oversight of the Foundation Team. Maintains accountability and compliance standards for donors and funding sources.


  • Leads the development of short and long-term fund development plans that align with the Providence St. Mary Integrated Strategic Financial Plan (ISFP).

  • Provides general oversight of the fundraising activities, monitors adequacy of activities through coordination with staff, committees, and Foundation Board.

  • Develops and maintains a professional relationship with business and community leaders, corporations, etc. to establish an ongoing donor base.

  • Ensures compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintains accountability standards to donors that are consistent with philanthropic principles, policies and procedures.

  • Participates in, as well as oversees, the development/maintenance of donor records systems, donor recognition programs, grant writing data bases and grant applications.

  • Participates in the recruitment and development of the Foundation Board, Committee Members and Volunteers to ensure effective fund development activities.

  • Serves as an ex-officio member of the St. Mary Foundation Board, provides advice and insights on organizational matters related to the Foundation.

  • Responsible for the overall operations and budget performance of the Foundation.

  • Oversees the management and supervision of the Foundation staff, provides training and development to ensure a highly functioning team.


Required experience/education for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 5 years fundraising experience in a professional position

  • Excellent communications (both written and verbal) proficiency in computer programs such as Word and Excel, Strategic Thinker, strong business acumen

  • Comprehensive management skills and experience including but not limited to: short and long-term planning, directing and motivating staff and volunteers, oral and written communication skills, marketing and financial management.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program, including a proven track record of successful fundraising.

  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas: the nature and dimensions of philanthropy, ethics, motivations for giving and volunteering, standard fundraising techniques including face-face solicitation, proposal and grant writing, special events planning, marketing direct mail campaigns.

  • Demonstrated experience and confidence in establishing relationships with key donors, asking people to contribute time and money.

Preferred experience/education for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Business.
