Providence is calling a full time, day shift Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Charge (Supervisor) - General Laboratory to Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, CA.

** We are looking specifically for someone who has been a Supervisor over Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Clinical Microscopy

We are seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Charge (Supervisor) - General Laboratory who will be reporting to the Laboratory Director, this position is responsible for performing superior customer satisfaction, ensuring the highest quality care and service. Performs a wide range of procedures including procedures of high complexity on the assigned Clinical Laboratory specialty as follows:

  • Hematology, Coagulation Urinalysis and Clinical Microscopy

  • General Chemistry, Toxicology and Immunology

  • Blood Bank

  • Microbiology

In this position you will:

  • Communicate and follow the organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues, when appropriate.


  • Maintain required applicable licensure, certification and education.

  • Attend and successfully completes general and department orientation, in-service programs and the annual key competencies and mandatory update requirements.

  • Participate actively in department staff meetings

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communications.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and performs work that is consistent with established age-specific policies and procedures, including but not limited to, identifying the need for additional safety measures, or activities that place patients at risk, specimen collection, processing and selection of appropriate equipment in all phases of testing (pre, analytical and post). Communicates pertinent age-specific information to all clients when needed. Communicates effectively in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Applicable for the populations: Infant, Pediatric, Adult, and Geriatric.

  • Perform automated and manual procedures, applying quality control procedures to establish validity: a) General Laboratory that includes Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Immunology and Serology, b) Microbiology or c) Blood Bank.

  • Review, release and report test results, recognizing unexpected and notifiable results and taking appropriate actions.

  • Collect specimens and take them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens appropriate for their priority and stability. Follows established labeling policies and procedures.

  • Oversee, coordinate and assume the validity of technical functions and activities of unlicensed staff.

  • Perform all calibration, quality control and take appropriate corrective action when required, prepares reagents, instrument check and preventive maintenance and maintains related records.

  • Troubleshoot problems related to methodology, systems and instrumentation.

  • Perform all appropriate computer-related functions, including monitoring and following up reports such as incomplete worklists, critical result logs, etc.

  • Follow through on established policies and procedures related to monitoring workflow and staffing levels as directed by Laboratory Supervisor or Director.

  • Request, monitor and stock supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.

  • Demonstrate willingness & ability to float to areas within their scope of practice as necessary.

  • Oversee and coordinate all technical functions and activities in area of expertise in the Clinical Laboratory including providing recommendations related to performance,

  • Meet all the standards and requirements by various accrediting agencies such as CAP, JCAHO, FDA, AABB, etc.

  • Maintain and update technical procedures, performs and schedules preventive maintenance and databases.

  • Maintain documentation, establishes record system, and maintains all quality control records, reports, statistics, logs, donor room look-back records and files.

  • Teach, orient, train staff in own area of specialization, prepares technical orientation including annual competency.

  • Perform survey materials and does comparative analysis; investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies and makes recommendations.

  • Request, monitor and stock supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist California License.

  • Current LA City Fire Card within 30 days of hire.

  • Three (3) years experience after CA Clinical Lab Scientist licensure as a Generalist, Blood Banker or Microbiologist.

  • Three (3) years supervisory experience in one of the following specialties:

  • Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Microscopy

  • General Chemistry, toxicology and Immunology

  • Blood Banking

  • Microbiology

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • SBB Certification (for Blood Bank).

  • Master's Degree in a Related Field (for General Laboratory).
