Providence is calling a Respiratory Therapist (Respiratory Therapy, Variable, 0.9 FTE) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:
Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other SHMC publics). Provides high quality service to all customers; focuses on understanding customers’ needs and follows through. Demonstrates respect for the capabilities, different cultures and or personalities of co-workers and Medical Center publics within the mission/values of SHMC.
Communication: Promote and demonstrateseffective, open and honest written and verbal communication skills.
Self Management: Demonstrate self-management behaviors which reflect a positive image of SHMC, following established policies and procedures and promote an efficient, cost effective work environment.

Perform the initial and ongoing respiratory assessment of the patient integrating input from team members.
Legibly and accurately document the initial and ongoing assessment in the patient record within the designated timeframe.
Identify respiratory problems based on:
Age and developmental stage
List patient respiratory problems or reviews those identified by other caregivers on the plan of care.
Identify and document patient family learning needs.
Help formulate the Respiratory Plan of Care with the patient/family and interdisciplinary team and documents desired outcomes/interventions for each respiratory problem on the plan of care.
Individualize Respiratory interventions to achieve desired outcomes based on orders, protocols, standards, and medical diagnosis.
Individualize Respiratory problems/interventions/outcomes so that they are culturally appropriate, measurable, and realistic to the age, preexisting condition, present/potential capabilities, and the desired outcome goals of the patient.
Implement and coordinate the prescribed Respiratory plan of care (including teaching) to meet the desired outcomes.
Provide safe and timely care consistent with current Respiratory practice standards, protocols and hospital policies and procedures.
Administer and document prescribed Respiratory medications and therapeutics in a manner consistent with knowledge of purpose, side effects, contraindications, and established guidelines.
Inform and educate patients and families about Respiratory medications and modalities/therapies patients are receiving during their hospitalization.
Use and apply Respiratory equipment and supplies correctly.
Assure all Respiratory modality/therapy orders are written in the chart. Initials all order entries after checking for content and accuracy.
Manage clinical emergencies effectively by obtaining an effective airway and instituting CPR as required.
Use age related concepts, body size, and preexisting conditions in implementing Respiratory care and therapeutics as demonstrated by adjusting medications, responding to ABG results, and equipment selection, etc.
Document patient responses to Respiratory modalities/therapeutics and seeks Medical consultation when unable to achieve desired results from prescribed treatments/modalities.
Provide Respiratory care according to Respiratory Therapy competencies, and approved protocols as needed.
Evaluate Respiratory problems identified on the plan of care as patient’s condition changes, or change is made in the medical treatment plan.
Evaluate patient responses to Respiratory therapeutics/modalities and documents legibly, accurately, completely, and in a timely manner on the appropriate forms, or electronically in the patient record.
Perform ongoing evaluation on patient’s Respiratory condition and responses to the Respiratory plan of care, modifying plan and taking action as indicated.
Evaluate and documents patient/family response to Respiratory teaching provided and documents on appropriate forms, or electronically.
Evaluate each Respiratory problem on the plan of care at the time of discharge and documents status and any follow-up plans.
Perform additional related duties as requested by Manager, Supervisor, or lead RT.
Keep current in any specialty areas that the RT has been cross-trained to. Takes accountability to maintain competency in those specialty areas.
Intervene and provide feedback when unsafe practice and/or inappropriate behaviors are witnessed and informs Respiratory Supervisor/Charge Nurse of witnessed unsafe practice.
Assist in the clinical orientation and development of new staff in cooperation with the RT Clinical Educator.
Provide coaching to new employees post orientation.
Seek opportunities to share knowledge with others to contribute to learning, problem solving and continuity of care.
Promote a positive learning environment and mentors students in collaboration with their instructor.
Inform Respiratory Supervisor/Charge Nurse when difficult problems, unusual developments or activities occur with patients/families/physicians/other departments.
Communicate adequate information on patient’s Respiratory care to team members as appropriate.
Participate in performance improvement (PI) activities and reviews results of ongoing PI measurements.
Recognize own limitations and seeks help from appropriate sources when needed.
Proactively participate in a problem-solving process based on comprehensive analysis of situations and demonstrating the use of critical thinking skills.
Make decisions and takes action consistent with SHMC philosophy, values, policies and procedures.
Perform lead duties as outlined in the lead RT competency.
Perform all the duties of a preceptor as outlined in the general orientation policy
Properly perform endotracheal intubation in the NICU as outlined in the NICU intubation competency.
Maintain competency on the following specialty ventilators:
High frequency jet ventilator
High frequency oscillatory ventilator
Deliver the following specialty gases as outlined in SHMC policy and procedures:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Associate's Degree OR Bachelor's Degree in AMA accredited school of Respiratory Therapy.
Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in Washington State (New graduates of AMA accredited school must be in the process of entry level exam to obtain a permanent license).
Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registry eligible Therapist required.
If not Registered on date of hire, must become Registered within 2 years.
