A $2,500 sign-on bonus is being offered to any new, external candidate hired into this position - $1,250 at hire and $1,250 upon 1 year anniversary.
Providence is calling a Phlebotomist (Lab Specimen Processing, Evenings,1.0 FTE) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:
Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other PSHMC publics). Quality Control / Quality Assurance / Quality Improvement: Maintain overall quality by performing and documenting quality checks.
Identify quality of care problems and documents and reports through appropriate channels.
Record temperatures and takes appropriate action when they fall outside tolerance limits.
Perform and records QC according to established guidelines.
Refer any questionable quality control to medical technologist or supervisor.
Perform and record routine maintenance checks on laboratory equipment and instruments according to departmental policy.
Apply appropriate criteria to evaluate maintenance checks; reports equipment/instrument problems to medical technologist or supervisor.
Collect, clean and distribute laboratory equipment such as glassware and other supplies.
Document workload recording/tallying of work performed as required.
Report to supervisor any suggestions for positive changes or recommendations in departmental policies and procedures that would improve efficiency or improve patient care.
Demonstrate the ability to recognize problems as they occur, identify the cause and determine a solution. Refers the problem to the appropriate person if needed.
Aware of Safe Medial Device Act and voluntary FDA reporting
Processing Functions: Accurately handle and delives specimens in a timely manner.
Clean centrifuges on a weekly basis and records according to departmental policy.
Correctly register patient demographics into the HIS and LIS computer systems.
Follow special handling requirements when processing samples.
Follow established guidelines for handling service samples.
Meet deadlines for specimen pick-ups and deliveries to departments.
Process specimens within the turn around time requirements.
Correctly place specimens in proper location: Department, refrigerator, and/or freezer, according to the specimen requirements after processing.
Correctly place specimens into tracking system so they can be tracked as they move about from division/facility to division/facility.
Continually maintain a professional/ appropriate departmental noise level.
Accurately place and pull specimens into and from storage..
Communicate correct specimen requirements accurately and courteously.
Monitor the add-on printer for additional testing to be performed on specimens in lab.
Troubleshoot problems appropriately.
Phlebotomy Functions: Demonstrate knowledge and technique while showing professionalism towards our patients.
Organize and maintain phlebotomy WOW cart in a sanitary and properly supplied condition.
Keep all supplies up to date.
Greet patients in a courteous manner by using scripting and explaining the procedure to be preformed.
Follow correct patient identification policy and procedure always using two patient identifiers.
Thoroughly clean patients’ skin in the area where the blood is to be drawn according to policy.
Complete blood drawing procedure according to established policy.
Accurately label the specimen immediately after blood draw.
Perform all drawing procedures in a professional manner with special attention to turn around times.
Select age appropriate equipment according to age specific draw.
Complete blood draws within 3-5 minutes.
Perform blood draws according to specific times requested or priority ordered.
Follow established policies for collection of special tests including scabies, sweat collection, ACT, PKU, New Born Screen, Teg Mapping etc....
Teaching: Demonstrate procedures, instrumentation and techniques to train new staff and students.
Share newly acquired knowledge by instructing co-workers, recommending procedural changes or presenting information in a manner acceptable to the supervisor.
Participate professionally in new employee orientation or training in procedures of all Medical Technology students, MLT Students, Career Focus students, and phlebotomy students.
Doctor’s Building/ Out Patient Laboratories: Maintain sample quality while demonstrating the key values towards our patients.
Identify Medicare patients and follows policy according to ABN regulations.
Correctly register patients into the HIS and LIS.
Follow established protocols regarding safety procedures re: drawing blood and pouring off specimens.
Specimen Handling: Maintain the quality of patient samples by following appropriate specimen handling specifications.
Properly identify and label patient specimens.
Follow correct specimen-handling requirements to maintain the highest sample quality from specimen collection through disposal.
Follow special handling requirements as required.
Prepare samples for transportation according to departmental policy and to meet all regulations.
Distribute samples to the correct location.
Provide clients with specimen requirement information in an accurate and courteous manner.
Provide clinicians/caregivers requested test results in an accurate and courteous manner.
Evaluate specimen integrity and takes corrective action when necessary.
Handle Stat specimens in a timely manner.
Notify technical staff when a test will be delayed due to a sample handling issue.
Seek information or asks for assistance from appropriate personnel when necessary.
Computer Functions: Perform computer data entry and maintains expertise with computer systems utilized for ordering and reporting of results.
Verify computer entries to ensure accuracy and demonstrates the ability to perform all data entry and use of laboratory software in an accurate manner.
Utilize the computerized information system efficiently.
Register patients in the computer using the correct patient identification information.
Accession specimens maintaining accuracy of specimen number, billing information, demographic data and patient identification.
Print pending logs and/or worksheets according to departmental policy; reviews as required.
Print labels and accurately labels specimens as required.
Print and distribute reports in an accurate and timely manner according to departmental policy.
Seek information or requests assistance when data or patient information is in question.
Supply Maintenance: Perform reagent and supply maintenance functions.
Monitor reagents/supplies and replenishes as needed.
Order reagents/supplies in a conscientious and cost-effective manner.
Receive reagents/supplies, dates and labels items as required, and verifies that proper supplies have been received in the ordered quantity.
Distribute reagents/supplies to appropriate laboratory sections, ensures that all sections are properly supplied.
Send out requested supplies to clients in an accurate and timely manner.
Prepare stock supplies/reagents such as 10% bleach, appropriately labeling and stocking as needed.
Laboratory Safety: Follow all safety guidelines outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual and Departmental Procedures.
Perform and document annual review of Laboratory Safety Manual.
Readsand initials all changes and updates to Safety policies and procedures.
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment including lab coats, gloves, face protection and respiratory protection as appropriate.
Remove personal protective equipment before leaving the work area, and never wears PPE anywhere that food or drink are consumed.
Identify potential or actual safety hazard problems and takes immediate corrective action. Promptly reports all incidents to supervisor.
Promptly report all personal accidents and incidents by means of the Employee Incident Report form.
Practice established guidelines for decontamination of hazardous chemical and biological substances.
Miscellaneous Duties: Perform miscellaneous duties as required by departmental needs and demonstrates willingness to participate in additional job assignments.
Answer calls appropriately and professionally, greeting caller in a courteous manner.
Accurately transfer calls to the proper departments or individuals.
Handle telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy and respect for confidentiality.
Inspire confidence in the laboratory from patients, clinicians and visitors by performing and communicating in a professional manner at all times.
File paperwork accurately and in a timely manner as required.
Work on special projects such as office work, assisting the technical staff or performing other duties as requested. Requires limited instructions to complete tasks/projects.
Required qualifications for this position include:
High school diploma or GED or documentation of higher education
Must have completed Medical Assistant with phlebotomy or Phlebotomy course
MA-Phlebotomist state license in either Active or Pending status
Laboratory or related science experience
Preferred qualification for this position include:
- 6 months phlebotomist specific experience which can include time spent in the Phlebotomist training program
