Providence Emergency Department Assistant - Pediatric ED in Spokane, Washington

In this position you will:
Customer Service: Maintain and promote positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other PSHMC publics). Provides high quality service to all customers; focuses on understanding customers’ needs and follows through. Assist the RN in prioritizing care.
Initiate treatments such as ice, elevation, pressure or safety measures based on patient's physical and psychological needs.
Notifies the RN or MD of emergent patient needs.
Priority EDA care duties in accordance with patient triage acuity levels.
Demonstrate understanding of basic anatomy and physiology of body systems which may be impaired by illness or injury.
Accurately complete delegated portions of the admission process.
Record and accurately times relevant data for every patient in a retrievable form according to department policies and as appropriate to the patient interaction.
Communicate patient issues, needs or changes in patient status to the appropriate Emergency Department staff member.
Use insight and experience to gather supplies which will be needed by RN or physician for care delivery.
Recognize own limitations and seeks directions from RN when needed.
Identify immediate patient needs and collaborates with the RN/MD to improve patient pain/discomfort, oxygenation, circulation and/or mentation status.
Communicate expected outcomes to other health care providers, the patient and family to ensure continuity of care.
Report pertinent information to appropriate persons for discharge planning.
Assist with errands to other departments as assigned by RN.
Inform RNs in care team/assignment when leaving immediate area.
Assist in the preparation of the patient for discharge as directed by the RN/MD.
Prioritize when planning for patient care and notifies RN/MD or charge RN when unable to meet all patient(s) needs/demands.
Assist the RN/MD in the implementation of the patient's plan of care.
Apply principles of correct body mechanics when providing assistance with ambulating and transfer of patients.
Demonstrate ability to correctly apply/fit patient with splints (both metal and plaster), ace wraps and crutches.
Follow established ED/Laboratory procedures for collection and processing of specimens.
Accurately label all specimens and puts into appropriate container.
Send requested lab specimens to Specimen Processing in a timely manner.
Document all blood draws in the Electronic medical record.
Communicate with charge RN when delays in specimen collection will occur.
Perform and documents POCT results according to ED procedure and competency training.
Perform lab QC according to daily or POCT lot assignment or Department assignment.
Notify the Lab immediately in regards to integrity issues of lab samples.
Appreciate the privilege of POCT testing in the ED and does not allow the resources of POCT to be used outside of ED/Lab policies.
Alert to patient's tolerance of lab procedure puncture sites.
Document regarding the assessment of the site initially post-lab procedure.
If RN or MD not immediately available at the desk, answers the HEAR radio to state “This is SHMC ED. Please hold for the Charge Nurse” as appropriate. The EDA does not receive the patch report, but ensures this is received only by an RN or MD.
Inform RN or charge RN when the EDA needs assistance with patient in order to implement job duties.
Demonstrate an awareness of current state and local laws governing the delivery of emergency care to the emergency patient.
Demonstrate flexibility by re-establishing priorities and work plan to compensate for unanticipated changes in work volume, emergencies, staffing and scheduling changes to adequately meet patient/family unit needs.
Demonstrate knowledge of standardized safety procedures in the emergency care setting.
Implement safety procedures for each patient in accordance with that patient's specific needs.
Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to implement the protocol to be followed in the event of an internal or external disaster/mass casualty or threat.
Recognize the potential for violence in the emergency setting and institutes appropriate action, notification and patient safety measures.
Turn patient rooms over in a timely manner and utilizes current electronic documentation system to communicate when they are clean.
When assigned to cover the desk, performs the following job duties:
Respond to MD requests for Consultation calls, and documents in electronic medical record when the Consulting Provider has been notified
Promptly notify the hospital Operator for each Trauma, Stroke, Sepsis and STEMI activation, and documents the required elements in the electronic medical record.
Correctly label documents to be scanned to HIM
Check fax machines and printers for paper
Complete IP bed requests on patients requiring admission
Request transport (as directed by RN) for patients ready for admission
Report POCT data immediately to ED physician and RN.
Assume responsibility for his/her actions.
Use self-evaluation, peer evaluation and feedback from health providers and others to improve practice.
Stock the department during shift according to specific equipment/supplies that are experiencing high volume use.
Document emergency care activities in a way that supports the charges incurred by the patient.
Ensure that charges to the patient are accurate and reflect the care that the patient received.
Required qualifications for this position include:
High School diploma or equivalent
Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist licensure in Washington state required within 180 days of hire
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
EMT/NAC/Medical Assistant experience
Emergency care experience
