Providence Chief Medical Officer - Swedish Medical Group in Seattle, Washington


The SMG CMO is responsible for all clinical activities within SMG. This role is responsible for oversight of all SMG clinics, primary and specialty care, including all aspects of their clinical operations. The CMO is ultimately also responsible for the activities of all SMG medical directors.

Examples include:

  • Membership on the SMG BOA senior leadership committee Membership on the Physician Executive Council, and committees of the PEC, including Finance and Operations and Advanced Practice Clinician Committee,

  • Membership of the SMG Compensation Committee and the Primary Care Compensation Taskforce

  • Chairmanship of the Medical Director and Provider Contracting Committee

  • Oversight of SMG Quality and Value, Nursing, Compliance Participation on specialty practice councils and boards, and Swedish Institute Leadership Councils

The SMG CMO will work with their administrative dyad to provide oversight and guidance to the financial aspects of SMG, and to development and implementation of strategic initiatives consistent with the strategic initiatives of SHS and Providence. In particular, Physician will collaborate with the SMG CE to provide leadership in preparing Swedish and Providence for Population/Value based care.

Examples include:

  • Involvement in developing care management, complex care, care teams, quality and utilization management infrastructure for Swedish and for the Providence ACO

  • Develop and assist with implementation of strategies for optimizing enrollment, HCC capture and disease management for patients covered by Medicare Advantage insurance plans

  • Membership on the Boeing/ACO Steering Committee

The SMG CMO will provide guidance to SHS leadership on matters of importance to SMG and to the clinical programs, business opportunities and strategies of SHS. Examples include:

  • Membership on the SHS Stewardship Committee

  • Membership and sponsorship of the SHS Care Transitions Steering Group Membership and sponsorship of the SHS Palliative Care Steering Group

The SMG CMO will provide leadership within Providence on matters of clinical and strategic significance to Swedish and to Providence.

Examples include:

  • Membership on Western Washington ACO Committees, including the Model of Care Committee and the Data and Analytics Committee Membership on the Providence Medical Group Leadership Council Membership on the Providence Palliative Care Steering Group

The SMG CMO works in a dyad partnership with an Administrative partner. The CMO is responsible for ensuring that all medical programs under their leadership conform to SMG standards of quality of care and that physicians and advanced practice clinicians ("APCs") adhere to all applicable SMG guidelines.

With dyad partner and regional leadership, CMO oversees development and implementation of strategic plans; assists with medical staff recruitment to achieve appropriate staffing levels; and ensures that clinic staff is well informed regarding SMG strategy, direction, current issues and management response to those issues.

CMO shares joint accountability with dyad partner for attainment of financial performance targets and for compliance with accreditation standards, and organizational requirements, such as medical management strategies, disease management programs, and service improvement initiatives, including customer satisfaction and complaint resolution.


  1. Develop Policies and procedures

  2. Provide medical direction and oversight for the development, implementation and compliance with appropriate program policies, procedures, and standards of care.

  3. Consult and participate actively in all compliance efforts, including but not limited to, standards and recommendations of the Joint Commission, applicable standards of relevant professional societies, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

  4. Monitor quality and appropriateness of medical care

  5. Participate in clinic, department, and program-specific and system-wide quality assurance and improvement programs (including, but not limited to, Culture of Safety, HIM Chart Integrity, and Electronic Quality Variance Reporting) through active involvement in identifying indicators, utilization of services, and appropriateness of treatment for clinical services.

  6. Direct the development and implementation of methods to monitor and analyze outcomes, track project development and performance improvement for the program.

  7. Manage patient clinical complaints and feedback.

  8. Promote best practices around staff engagement, patient experience, and value.

  9. Provide guidance and leadership

  10. Provide effective leadership, by motivating staff and providers to produce excellence in their work both individually and as a team. Create a positive work environment for all staff.

  11. Create timely and direct communication channels to deal with service, clinical or performance issues, ensuring prompt and appropriate resolution.

  12. Serve as a role model in setting standard of practice and performance.

  13. Promote and provide opportunities for both clinical and/or administrative staff professional development.

  14. Attend standing meetings

  15. Establish regular meetings with the administrative and provider staff to monitor and evaluate internal operations and progress towards meeting annual goals.

  16. Serve as the key communications link to staff physicians, other providers, and dyad partner by relaying all information garnered from meetings by tying SMG­ SHS- and Providence-wide efforts and initiatives to the clinic, program, and department level.

  17. Participate actively in meetings within SMG, SHS and Providence, and act as a liaison for communication and problem-solving both internally and externally.

  18. Clinical Peer review

  19. Monitor clinical adherence to all applicable SMG policies and procedures, initiating prompt corrective action plans to address issues.

  20. Provide direct supervision to all direct reports, and assist in their ability, and all medical directors' ability to provide supervision and guidance to clinical and administrative staff.

  21. Direct the development and utilization of tools and other resources to analyze provider productivity and lead effort to address issues in conjunction with dyad partner.

  22. Physician relations and/or representation

  23. Serve as a professional link between SMG medical staff, Swedish medical directors, Swedish medical staff, departments and Administration to resolve conflicts, facilitate communication, and engage in development of interdisciplinary treatment teams and approaches.

  24. Promote collaboration and cooperation with independent Swedish physicians and business partners.

  25. Strategic development

  26. Participate in the SMG and SHS strategic planning processes, updating organizational design to maximize productivity and operational efficiency while improving quality and controlling costs.

  27. With dyad partner, participate actively in the budgeting process, setting reasonable financial goals and striving to maintain cost-effective practice guidelines while achieving the highest quality of care.

  28. Physician behavior and impairment issues

  29. Assist medical directors in addressing physician and medical director behavior and impairment issues.

  30. Documentation and Care planning

  31. Organize and lead multidisciplinary process to develop, maintain, and update clinical pathways, guidelines, and care plans related to specialty.

  32. Actively participate in the process of Care Transformation by developing and implementing SMG strategic initiatives in Care Transformation.


  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals -- physicians, APCs, administrators, and support staff -- recognizing different styles and cultures.
