Providence is calling a Pharmacy Technician Oncology (Full-Time/Day Shift) to Providence Saint Johns Medical Foundation in Santa Monica, CA.

We are seeking a Pharmacy Technician Oncology who will support and assist in the coordination of Pharmacy Services activities including drug compounding and transporting of compounded drugs, medication refills and prior authorization claims, compounding pharmacy maintenance and scheduled cleanings, inventory management of drugs and infusion supplies, under the supervision of the Advanced Practice Pharmacist

  • Regular office hours Monday through Friday eight (8) hours shifts.

  • Position Specific Expectations:

  • Manage medication refills utilizing standardized protocols

  • Prepare, compound, dispense, and deliver hazardous/chemotherapy and non-hazardous intravenous medications to medical offices, according to approved policies and procedures which are compliant with current legal and regulatory agencies, including California State Board of Pharmacy, USP 797/800, NIOSH, and OSHA.

  • Collect , organize , and evaluate relevant patient information (i.e. medical diagnosis, laboratory values, medications used) from patient’s chart or by contacting the medical staff/ physicians

  • Courier compounded regimens safely to Infusion locations primary care

  • Manage medication prior authorization requests

  • Contact health plan or pharmacy for additional information

  • Assist pharmacist in health care financial assistance for non-covered medications

  • Complete initial competency assessment requirements, including age specific competencies for all patients to whom pharmaceutical care is provided; successfully completes annual competency assessment exams

  • Prioritize work effectively

  • Contribute to quality improvement activities and helps implement change

  • Answer the phone calls; uses appropriate and courteous phone etiquette

  • Attend and participates in team meetings

  • Maintain Pharmacy inventory

  • Support and assist the pharmacist in the coordination of pharmacy services

  • Compound drug regimens as ordered by providers under pharmacist supervision.

  • Clean and maintain compounding pharmacy in conjunction with other pharmacy staff

  • Use of technology/computers:

  • Generate required reports

  • Utilize fax machine, photocopier

  • Quality of work:

  • Perform job functions with minimum errors

  • Document the services provided in patient’s chart using EPIC.

  • Observe and follows all safety standards

  • Productivity:

  • Complete tasks in timely manner

  • Perform required tasks in appropriate time frame

  • Is aware of workload and prioritizes effectively

  • Take initiative during slow times to help other co-workers, start preparing for future tasks, and help the Advance Practice Pharmacist

  • Participate in team administrative functions as directed (scheduling, minutes, QA reviews, etc.)

  • Staff refills and prior authorizations for the primary care offices.

  • Perform job functions with minimum errors.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Successful Completion of a State Recognized Pharmacy Tech Program and Successful passing of a competency test and registration course.

  • Current California Pharmacy technician license.

  • Current California Driver's License with clean driving record

  • Working knowledge of prescriptions plans and health insurances.

  • Knowledge of managed care principles.

  • Some knowledge of health care financial and payer issues.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of safe chemotherapy compounding techiques.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with many people.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and coordinate work with others.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to apply sound judgment.

  • Ability to work independently but under the supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and other applications as required.

  • Excellent oral and communication skills.

  • Successful passing of a competency test.

  • Successful passing of Registration course.

Preferred qualifications for this position i nclude:

  • One (1) year of experience as a pharmacy technician in an outpatient, ambulatory care, retail, or managed care setting, or completion of a technician training program, with a demonstrated ability to learn technical skills.

  • Pharmacy prior authorization experience.

  • Oncology compounding experience with proven competency

  • Knowledge of USP <797> and <800> compounding regulations

  • Managed care experience.

  • Experience using electronic medical records.
