Providence is calling a Laboratory Supervisor to the Chemistry Department for Full-Time Day Shift to Providence Saint John's Health Cente r in Santa Monica, CA
$7,000 Sign-on Bonus Eligible to External Candidates
We are seeking a Lab Supervisor for Chemistry who will ensure quality patient care in assigned areas of responsibility; Is responsible for the technical and scientific oversight of the assigned Laboratory section(s), train and evaluate the technical competency of the section personnel. Make clinical / technical decisions to resolve problems, to meet Hospital and departmental goals and assure quality patient care. Maintains the quality and security of departmental data. Supervise personnel performance and training, maintenance of systems and QC.
In this position you will:
Perform patient and department assessment; prioritize work and provide prompt and efficient service
Demonstrate competency in selected skills, including but not limited to:
Ensuring that appropriate safeguard procedures have been established and are being followed
Performing and / or acting as resource for point of care testing in the Laboratory
Completing daily departmental CQI and preventive maintenance
Monitoring and ordering department testing supplies as needed
Maintaining records of testing results and department statistics
Providing information / education for department staff as needed
Demonstrate supervisory skills including:
Acting as resource for team members in budgeting, scheduling, work assignments, leading team meetings, quality improvement activities, conflict resolution, intra-team representation and time and attendance records
Assisting in evaluating and documenting employee performance
Developing staff
Maintaining procedure manuals relating to testing
Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice in regards to:
Attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality
Positive public relation image and working relationships
Obtaining necessary knowledge and skill needed to maintain competence
Completing all mandatory requirements including annual safety skills, CPR, infection control and annual physical
Participate in the development and attainment of team, department, and hospital goals including:
Attending and participating in team meetings
Volunteering or accepting assignment of projects
Mission, vision and team ground rules
May function as Technical Supervisor, and/or General Supervisor (if qualified under CLIA 88 regulations, section 493) if designated by the Medical Director, Pathology
Ensure section compliance with licensing / accrediting standards. Is responsible for the following:
In consultation with the Medical Director or his designee, selection of test methodology that is appropriate for the clinical use of the test results
Verification of the test procedures performed and establishment of the laboratory’s test performance characteristics, including the precision and accuracy of each test and test system
Enrollment and participation in an HHS approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered
Establishing a Quality Control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishing the parameter for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of the specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of the test results
Resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken whenever testing results or QC deviate from the laboratory’s established specifications
Ensuring the ongoing maintenance of clinical, technical and computer systems and ensuring that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly
Identifying training needs and assuring that each individual performing testing receives regular and necessary in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of the laboratory service performed.
Evaluating the technical competency of personnel and assuring that staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently
Evaluating and documenting the performance of individuals responsible for high complexity testing unless test methodology or instrumentation changes, in which case, prior to reporting patient test results the individual’s performance must be reevaluated to include the use of the new test methodology or instrumentation
Maintaining required records to meet licensing and accreditation requirements of all appropriate Regulatory agencies
Ensure that the section is up-to-date on current regulations and technical / clinical information
Keep current with regulations related to his /her section of the laboratory and ensure compliance with them in a timely manner
Keep abreast of current advances related to his / her specialty and incorporate applicable information into the procedures of the department
Respond to actual / potential risk to patient / employee by taking action to correct, minimize, or prevent risk
Other:
Participate in Laboratory-wide team tasks as needed
Perform tasks of Medical Technologist in the section
Participate in recruitment and selection of staff
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science or Chemistry
1 year internship in approved Medical Technology program
Additional education in assigned section or experience in assigned section
Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license
National certification (ASCP or equivalent) recommended
4 years experience (department specific) as Clinical Laboratory
Medical Technologist in hospital or medical setting
Ability to deal effectively with many people
Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills
Must be able to prioritize, organize, and coordinate care
Ability to work effectively in a self-directed team setting
Demonstrated ability to motivate, supervise and instruct laboratory personnel
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- 2 years supervisory experience in hospital or medical setting
