Providence Health & Services Senior Data Scientist in Renton, Washington


Providence is calling a Sr Data Scientist to Providence Health & Services Portland, OR. Seattle, WA or Renton, WA may be a possibility but Portland is strongly preferred.

We are seeking a Sr Data Scientist to provide strong analytical and leadership expertise for advanced strategic projects supporting the Providence system. This includes using creativity to solve data and analytical strategic and research problems. The Senior Data Scientist will create databases, conduct appropriate analyses and present data and information in an innovative format for interpretation by organizational leaders. The Senior Data Scientist oversees and is involved in investigative design, data collection, performs statistical analysis of data, interprets results, verifies data accuracy, and prepares final reports using computer graphics and word processing software.

In this position you will:

  • Use creativity to solve data and analytical problems for the organization.

  • Visualize complex data into an easy to understand format for interpretation by leaders across the organization.

  • Create appropriate databases from multiple data sources including the electronic medical record, as well as survey, patient-entered data, hospital, and health plan data.

  • Creative ability to evaluate and assess available relevant data sources (both internal and publicly available data) to bring them together for the given study/project.

  • Communicate with diverse stakeholders across the organization. Communication and presentation to senior leadership across the organization. Tailor findings and outputs to different stakeholder groups.

  • Lead on all applicable project teams to assist in defining the necessary outcome data to collect and sources for collecting that data.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s degree in analytical sciences (statistics, finance, public health, epidemiology, hard/soft science) is required, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • 7 years’ experience in data analysis, advanced statistical analysis or predictive analytics.

  • Expert with relational databases and familiar with non-relational data models, large datasets and unstructured data.

  • Strong experience with a statistical programming language with either R or Python (experience with both are preferred).

  • Expert knowledge of statistical analysis, software functionality, logical systems, and scientific methods.

  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Ability to perform complex analyses for strategic or research projects, such as study design/sample size estimations and analysis of study results.

  • Ability to reformat raw data received in a variety of formats into a normalized, relational database appropriate to the analyses to be performed.

  • Ability to investigate, organize, and merge data from different sources into a single data structure.

  • Ability to execute logical data queries from hospital, health plan, and clinical information systems.

  • Ability to prepare and execute tasks to validate appropriateness of particular scientific methods or approaches.

  • Ability to manage multiple significant sized projects in a deadline-oriented environment.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance. A self-directed learner and explorer.

  • Strong visualization and presentation development skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills

  • Passionate about data

  • Knowledge of office tools, operating systems, and hardware.

  • Strong business knowledge to communicate findings and to provide interpretation of results.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • PhD.

  • Professional experience in the healthcare industry.

  • Statistical modeling experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong Experience with some automated reporting tool (SSRS, Crystal Reports, QlikView, etc.), Tableau a plus.

  • Hands-on experience data mining and predictive modeling. Experience with machine learning a big plus.

  • Familiarity with general programming languages such as Python, C or .Net suite a big plus.

  • Experience with parallel processing methods (Hadoop, etc.) a plus.
