Providence St. Joseph Health is calling for aRegional Director for Ethics in Western Washington
The Regional Director will provide services to support and advance
the theological and ethical dimension of the PSJH health care ministries in
Western Washington (Olympia and Everett areas generally). Reporting to the PSJH
Senior Vice President for Theology & Ethics (SVP), they will provide
ethics education, clinical and organizational ethics consultation, and policy
development and review for ethics committees, patients and families, physician
and nursing staffs, residents, ministry leadership and others. Serves on
various committees and councils of the Theology and Ethics Department and
contributes to system-wide projects and initiatives of the Department.
In addition, specific focus areas will include:
Perform all duties and responsibilities consistent with the mission and values of PSJH and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health CareServices (ERDs).
Maintains a collaborative and regular reporting relationship with the SVP.
Providesupport for, and oversight of, local ethics leaders, Ethics Committees, and ethics champions.
Serves as a member of local ministry Ethics Committees, chairs the Western Washington Area Regional Ethics Committee, and serves as a member of the Ethics Leadership Council.
Provide ethics education for Ethics Committees, physician and nursing staffs,ministry leadership, Mission Integration leadership formation programs, and for others as is appropriate.
Provide clinical ethics consultation for and with Ethics Committees, clinical consult teams, patients and families, physician and nursing staffs,ministry leadership, and others.
Participates in PSJH mission discernments.
Develops and recommends appropriate regional ethics policies and contributes to the development and review of other policies as is appropriate and in collaboration with appropriate stakeholders and committees.
Assesses needs in the areas of ethics education, consultation, ERDs compliance, and other appropriate areas and recommends measures to address these needs to appropriate ethics committees and councils of the Theology and Ethics. Department and to the SVP.
At the direction of the SVP, participates in system-wide projects and initiatives of the Theology and Ethics Department.
Participates in PSJH clinical conferences and other PSJH conferences as is appropriate.
Engages in professional development activities with the approval of the SVP.
Maintains collaborative relationships with the regional mission leader and with ethicists, other mission leaders, and other ministry leaders of PSJH and makes referrals as is appropriate.
Contributes to collaborative relationships with local bishops and diocesan officials under the supervision of the SVP.
Provides ethics expertise for PSJH advocacy efforts as is appropriate.
Maintains and submits to the SVP an annual log of significant and continuing activities related to the position responsibilities.
Annually assists the SVP, in identifying budgetary needs and collecting budgetary data for the Theology and Ethics departmental budget for the western area of the PSJH Washington Region.
Engages in writing self-initiated or requested publications in the area of healthcare ethics for internal and external publications with appropriate authorization from the SVP.
Performs other duties as may be assigned by the SVP.
Required qualifications for this positioninclude:
Ph.D.in Bioethics, Philosophy, Moral Theology (equivalent education/experience may be considered).
Three years of supervised clinical ethics experience in a Catholic health care setting (preferred).
Thorough knowledge of Catholic health care ethics and the Ethical and ReligiousDirectives for Catholic Health Care Services.
Knowledge of the following:
Catholic moral and social teaching
The mission, values, and priorities of Catholic health care.
Bioethics, clinical ethics, and organizational and social ethics.
The nature and function of health care ethics committees.
Health care delivery, operations, and priorities.
Ability to appropriately communicate and apply Catholic moral and social teaching and tradition to clinical, social, and organizational issues.
Abilityto create and implement items such as procedures, policies, educationaltools, and quality metrics. Knowledge of Catholic teaching and traditionon the principles of cooperation and theological scandal.
Excellent communicatin skills; effective communication with diverse groups; ability to facilitate meetings; ability to manage conflict and build consensus.
Teaching/presentation skills and facilitation with adult learning methods; critical thinking; creative problem solving; expertise in moral reasoning.
Ability to facilitate, coach, and negotiate in ethics consultations and mission discernments.
