We are seeking a Software Engineer - Cancer Research who will join a team that is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the cloud-based information systems (IS) and technologies needed for the management and analysis of basic science and clinical trials data. This position works directly with researchers on the analysis and interpretation of advanced high throughput molecular, genomic, and clinical data types including gene expression, imaging, electronic medical records, etc. You will contribute to the strategic vision, direction, and operations of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute by developing and implementing solutions using best-practices software development/programming methodologies.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain cloud-based information systems (IS) and technologies needed for the management and analysis of research and clinical trials data

  • Contribute to the strategic vision, direction, and operations of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute by developing and implementing the information systems and software solutions required to meet the current and projected research needs of the Institute

  • Work directly with researchers on the design and implementation of systems and infrastructure supporting modern research and software development/programming methodologies

  • Assist in defining business processes, practices, and tools

  • Coordinate Information Services, Providence Health and Services support departments, and vendor activity

  • Evaluate existing systems and components to determine integration requirements to ensure software solutions meet the organizational needs

  • Explore and analyze new technologies, where appropriate, to promote, improve or streamline research processes

  • Understand pain points, articulate opportunity, collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams to design the right solutions, execute projects, and manage internal relationships to best serve Cancer Research

  • Understand overall software development life cycle

  • Assist in gathering, clarifying, and documenting requirements of solutions

  • Deliver software documentation, programs, scripts, configuration files, and other programming artifacts as needed to implement solutions

  • Provide training and mentoring to other team members on high-level design, implementation design, coding skills and best practices, when necessary

  • Systems testing and on-going maintenance

  • Management and maintenance of DEV, TEST and potentially PROD Environments

  • Research and investigate new capabilities of various technologies, (e.g. cloud services) and new techniques in areas such as data visualization, machine learning, and data security.

  • Provide timely insight and advice to leadership to permit the leveraging of these technologies in future plans


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related specialty. -OR- four (4) years of related experience

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Software Developer/Engineer, Dev Ops or a position that had the same or similar primary duties with a Bachelor's degree, - OR-

  • Six (6) years of experience in a position that had the same or similar primary duties without a degree

  • Experience with software versioning and release management

  • Experience with server management

  • Experience coding in Ruby, JavaScript, HTML, Python and similar languages

  • IT Project Management experience

  • Experience linux operating system and command line

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Working knowledge of network hardware, technologies, and Operating Systems

  • Experience in a Clinical Lab or Research Lab environment

  • Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) experience
