Providence is calling a Hospital Supervisor - Nursing Service Administration (0.0 FTE, Nights) to Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, OR
We are seeking a Hospital Supervisor - Nursing Service Administration that will coordinate the general operation of the Department of Nursing and provides administrative coverage for Providence Portland Medical Center and those departments operating on a 24-hour basis when senior administrative personnel are not present.
The Hospital Supervisor acts as a mentor and role model for the nursing staff on his/her shift by supporting and assisting the staff in development of problem solving assertiveness and leadership skills. The Hospital Supervisor also works in collaboration with the Nurse Manager and Staffing department in assisting with staffing and in crisis situations, as appropriate, supports the Nurse Manager and Charge Nurse in coordination and assignment of the nursing staff. The Hospital Supervisor initiates the disaster preparedness plan if needed in collaboration with the Manager of Emergency Preparedness. Having the ability to communicate effectively, function in crisis and urgent situations and to follow-up with department managers and staff are key skills required for this position.
The Hospital Supervisor is accountable for patient flow, and the provision and quality of nursing services at the facility level for a defined shift, in support of Providence Health & Services system and regional goals. This includes assuring safe, efficient, and effective patient placement, balanced with optimal and efficient patient care and service. This accountability assumes a primary focus on patient flow, assuring the patient reaches the right bed, the first time, with the necessary resources to provide care. With a constant focus on patient safety, patient-centeredness, and efficient processes and systems, the Hospital Supervisor supports standards and systems for care delivery for the facility.
Provide leadership that consistently supports efficient and effective patient care services and that supports the organizational and system goals. This includes advancing the strategic vision and goals of PPMC. Constructively manages change and promotes a team-based approach. The incumbent consistently role models professional nursing standards and expectations.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Appraise and adjust staffing on the nursing units during the shift, enters corrected census for staffing of upcoming shift, and assists the staffing department personnel in the absence of the staffing Coordinator or Nurse Manager
Perform and maintain hospital administrative responsibilities during the shift, consults with the Manager, on-call Administrator when appropriate, and seeks assistance when needed. Documents administrative concerns/problems/incidents with actions taken for the Managers and Administration
Respect and protect the rights and dignity of employees and patients
Respond to concerns of physicians and staff of other departments in the absence of their Department supervisor, consults with Department Managers when appropriate, and documents actions taken for Nursing Administration Manager, Department Manager, and Administration
Respond to building and facility concerns/problems off hours, coordinates efforts to problem-solve, consults with on-call Administrator as appropriate, and documents actions taken for appropriate department manager
Coordinate patient flow/placement in close collaboration with bed control
Keep current and shares knowledge of hospital policies, procedures, goals, and strategic plan. Understands, initiates, and communicates hospital emergency/disaster procedures
Respond to and coordinates response to unusual occurrences off hours, patient or employee injury, and deaths
Document and follow up on concerns as appropriate
Respond to community and media concerns during off hours, seeking assistance of Community Relations Department when appropriate
Attend evidence-based continuing education related to performance of job. Stays current with nursing best practices and healthcare issues
Respond to crises and disasters off hours, coordinating hospital efforts in conjunction with the Emergency Physician
Consult with on-call Administrator and seeks administrative assistance when appropriate
Document actions taken
Collaborate with unit Charge Nurse, manager, and staffing office to problem solve staffing issues for the shift
Collaborate with Nurse Managers and Charge Nurse in evaluating and counseling staff, when assistance is requested
Provide written documentation to NMs regarding any concern or observation of their staff
Take action and collaborates with the Emergency Department and Access Services to allow the acceptance of inpatient admissions during times of high census or staffing shortages, Successful completion, of this task, results in a minimal number of diverted ambulances or diverted admissions
Exhibit quality and safety focus and active involvement in improvement of patient flow processes
Collect data to measure success
Required qualifications for this position includes:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
Current, unencumbered license as RN in the State of Oregon
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card required, must be from the following authorized governing bodies:
American Heart Association (AHA) - (BLS Provider),
American Red Cross (ARC) - (BLS for Health Care Provider), -OR-
Military Training Network (MTN) (Healthcare Provider) upon hire.
Four (4) years of acute care nursing experience
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
Master's Degree in Nursing -OR- related field
National Certification in med/surg -OR- related nursing area
Three (3) years of supervisory or managerial experience
