Providence is looking a Histotechnician 3 (1.0 FTE, NIGHT SHIFT) to Providence Portland Office Park Portland in Portland, OR.

We are seeking a Histotechnician who will contribute a valuable service aiding pathologists in providing patient diagnoses. Information gained through microscopic evaluation of tissue slides prepared by histology technicians allows a pathologist to either identify or dismiss disease. The preparatory steps taken to ensure a quality diagnosis are key to this relationship. Under general supervision, the Histotechnician 3 prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic and/or research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen accessioning; and maintains laboratory and equipment. Knowledge of the basic pathologic conditions, skills in the use of precision equipment, and performance of special stains are required for accurately demonstrating the morphology of tissue specimens. In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Process incoming samples for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the pathologists.
Prepare special stains, enzyme histochemical and immunofluorescent procedures and other techniques to aid or facilitate diagnoses on tissue specimens.
Process specimen accessioning to include all manual and computerized data entry.
Prepare and maintain all necessary reagents, including stains, alcohols, and paraffin according to proper specifications
Perform embedding, microtome sectioning of paraffin sections and autopsy tissues.
Demonstrate proper use and LIS maintenance of records for tissue samples, containers, cassettes as well as blocks and slides.
Perform cryotomy of frozen tissues.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding of special procedures for specimen handling.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding of quality assurance processes.
Demonstrate an in depth understanding of equipment use and maintenance.
Demonstrate positive guidance in working with others to identify, analyze and resolve technical and procedural problems.
Demonstrate enhanced verbal communication skills by providing succinct situation summaries of evolving issues.
Practice stewardship in ordering reagents, equipment and supplies.
Demonstrate knowledge for implementation of applicable regulatory requirements.
Demonstrate strong troubleshooting skills with equipment and H&E staining process.
Required qualification in this position include:
- Histology Technician (HT) or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification with High School Diploma/GED: plus 8 years industry experience at an equivalent high volume or acute care laboratory performing high complexity testing
- HT (ASCP) certification from accredited training program, or on-the- job training (OJT): plus 7 years industry experience at an equivalent high volume or acute care laboratory performing high complexity testing.
Preferred qualification in this position include:
Associate's degree in Algebra, Chemistry and Biological
Bachelor's degree in Algebra, Chemistry and Biological
Six (6) years of Histotech experience (**) AND Associate Degree AND successful completion of an accredited HT training program AND Certification (HT, HTL) from a government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (eg. ASCP, NCA, etc.).
Five (5) years of Histotech experience (**) AND Bachelor degree AND successful completion of an accredited HT training program AND Certification (HT, HTL) from a government agency or nationally recognized professional organization (eg. ASCP, NCA, etc.).
Histotech experience from an equivalent high volume or acute care laboratory performing high complexity testing
Soft Skills in this position include:
Team oriented great work ethic (focused on the work)
Thrives in a high volume environment
Experienced with a wide range of tissue types/sizes and cutting/embedding protocols
Familiar with using a LIS system (Cerner Millennium AB&T preferred)
Able to cut and/or embed for extended periods of time
Adaptable to current protocols and procedures
