Providence Health & Services Assessment Intake and Referral Coordinator in Portland, Oregon


Providence is calling an Assessment Intake and Referral Coordinator to work within Behavioral Health Services at Providence Office Park Portland in Portland, OR. This is a day shift, 0.6 FTE position.

In this position, you will work 2, 12-hour shifts per week.

(Week #1 - Wed/Thurs - 7a-7:30p & Week #2 - Fri/Sat - 7a-7:30p)

A part-time benefits package is available for this position.

We are seeking an Assessment Intake and Referral Coordinator who will critically assesses the treatment needs of patients, determines the appropriate level of care and secures patient account reimbursement by obtaining complex demographic, insurance and behavioral health clinical information. Additionally, identifies behavioral health services requiring insurance verification and initial insurance authorization for treatment and ensures required authorizations are in place. Communicates all pertinent collateral clinical information to the psychiatrist on call for services, then facilitates the communication/coordination with the unit charge nurse where the respective patient will be placed.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Conduct telephonic clinical assessment as needed. Direct the patient to the appropriate level of treatment through direct telephonic discussion with either the provider of the patient, the patient themselves, or a family member of the patient.

  • Confirm eligibility and benefit information from third party payors to secure sponsorship of patient accounts.

  • Ensure authorizations or referrals for services provided are obtained and documented within required time frames as designated by contract or third party payers.

  • Manage multiple complex processes related to the client's county of residence, insurance coverage, and level of care needed in order to accurately determine best course of action.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in a clinical area such as Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or Behavioral Health Rehab; from an accredited school, or from a school in candidacy status.

  • 3 years of experience working within an Inpatient Acute Behavioral Health environment providing Behavioral Health/psychiatric assessments to patients, or equivalent experience providing similar assessment, intake and referral functions for acute psychiatry services.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience with payor established level of care criteria

  • Registrar and third party payor experience

  • Oregon license from a recognized state licensing Board, or eligibility for licensure

  • Ability to work in an office/desk environment that involves a great deal of computer screen time and phone work.
