Providence St. Joseph Health is calling for a Chief Operating Officer at St. Joseph Hospital in Polson, MT


Reporting to the Chief Executive, Montana Service Area, the COO leads, manages and directs day-to-day operations in Lake County to ensure the delivery of high quality, cost effective health care at high levels of patient and customer satisfaction consistent with the mission and values of Providence St Joseph Health. These ministries include Providence St Joseph Medical Center, Providence Assisted Living Facility and Providence Medical Group Clinics. The COO is responsible for the complete continuum of services and programs in the ministries located in Lake County. The COO for Lake County ministries is accountable to lead the process for developing and implementing an integrated delivery system in alignment with the Quadruple Aim and for healthcare operations in the ministries listed. The integrated delivery system will be organized to provide a continuum of services responsive to community needs. The integrated delivery system will enhance access and quality of services that are available to the communities where the above listed ministries reside.

In this position you will:

  • Oversee the financial and capital management for Lake County ministries.

  • Monitor performance for finance, quality, and patient experience, developing action plans for improvement as appropriate.

  • Ensurescompliance with State and Federal regulations.

  • Set high standards and accountability for ongoing excellence and business growth while maintaining the highest integrity.

  • Provide timely guidance and feedback to ensure ongoing excellence, business growth, and high integrity.

  • Provide leadership to maximize quality, cost effectiveness, patient satisfaction and responsiveness.

  • Develop networks and relationships with community leaders, employers and providers as appropriate to improve community health and enhance the continuum of care.

  • Represent MSA before local, statewide, legislative and regulatory boards in particular for rural healthcare.

  • Persuade external strategic alliance partners to take action that will create business opportunities.

  • Build strategic relationships with alliance partners to advance shared goals.

  • Leverage business knowledge and experience to identify strategic alliances that will create business opportunities.

  • Work cooperatively with team members on the development and implementation of an integrated delivery system.

  • Maintain positive relationships with the Medical Staff to integrate physicians into the decision-making processes and to ensure that physician needs are met.

  • Provide leadership in integration interests of physicians, physician organizations, other health systems, health plans, hospital and shared services employees for effective and efficient continuum of services to members and patients.

  • Represent the organization to the communities served as appropriate.

  • Demonstrate positive interactions with the public and positive interpersonal relations in working with employees, managers, and others to maximize productivity and quality of work life.

  • Establishe organizational structures and management systems to achieve excellence in care and services.

  • Ensure productivity, culture of excellence and patient experience is incorporated into all aspects of programs and services.

  • Sets high standards and accountability for continuous improvement in processes that will enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Lead quality improvement and patient safety activities which promote employee/physician involvement in decision-making on work organization and patient care delivery.

  • Create a strong culture of safety which encourages effective communication with all staff to report issues and change systems.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Hospital Administration, Business Administration or related field

  • 4 years of significant senior level leadership experience in a health care delivery organization

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Direct clinical experience is strongly preferred.

  • Experience leading in a critical access hospital environment

  • Broad knowledge and understanding of trends and changes taking place in health care and the implications of those changes

  • Record of forming, implementing and executing strategic plan for an organization focused on high clinical value and growth

  • Knowledge and experience working within integrated health systems and a track record of successful relationships with the integration of employed and private physicians

  • Knowledge and experience with managing the day-to-day financial operations of multiple location delivery systems

  • Ability to lead complex organizations through a transition process

  • Understanding of local integrated delivery systems and of a large, multi-site health system


The Montana Service Area is organized to optimize those services that can be best delivered on a centralized or regional basis. The following services provide an infrastructure for MSA and should not be duplicated except if deemed appropriate by the MSA Senior Executive Team. Regional Services include: Providence Medical Group, Finance, Information Services, Human Resources, PHC Foundation, Strategic Planning, Marketing and Communication, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory Services, Pharmacy Services, Risk Management, Infection Control, Quality and Outreach. MSA is organized to help provide a continuum of service that will enhance access, quality and the cost of services available to the Lake County Ministries
