We are looking for a Lead Laboratory Assistant for the Clinical Laboratory at St. Joseph Hospital Orange.

Location: Orange, CA

Work Schedule: Full Time - 80 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 8-hour, Evenings

Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Division Supervisor, the Lead Lab Assistant coordinates and organizes the daily operations of the inpatient/outpatient phlebotomy team assuring accurate and timely collection, receipt and delivery of laboratory specimens. Also, coordinates and organizes the daily operations in processing along with lab assistant duties in various sections of the lab. Effectively uses job knowledge and exercises good judgment in leading staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures that the routine daily operations of the lab divisions are accomplished according to established protocols (accurate and timely collection, receipt and delivery of blood specimens). Also, ensures that daily operation of processing area and lab assistant duties are accomplished according to established protocols (accurately & timely receipt of specimens, correct loading of specimens on instrumentation, accurate specimen distribution and management).

  • Coordinates and assists with new hire orientation and paperwork, training, competency evaluations, and peer reviews of phlebotomy/processing/lab assistant staff and completes own re-certifications, competencies and licensure in a timely manner. Assist with tracking cross-training of Lab Assistants and scheduling routine hospital requirements and Healthstream required modules for all staff.

  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities (ECC, STAT, and Timed). Make sure staffing coverage is adequate throughout the lab to meet established turn around times in Collecting, Processing, and loading specimens.

  • Performs data entry and ordering. Ensure accuracy of orders; time, date and initials of person drawing; VP/CP charges; combining accession numbers; documentation of edits; comments; cancellations using appropriate coded comments.

  • Labels and records specimen collection data on all tubes / aliquots / NBS’s accurately, immediately after specimen collection. Ensures accuracy of collected specimens by visual verification / inspection / integrity, and proper patient identification along with orders.

  • Provide routine assistance with monthly reports, hazmat inventory, statistics, hand hygiene, and monitor P&P are reviewed, current, and signed off.

  • Demonstrates timely response to resolution of customer service issues by providing information, clarification, and direction within scope of position. Replies to Confidential Event Notifications (RL solution) applicable to phlebotomy & processing within scope of position.

  • Performs capillary and venous specimen collections with minimal redraws, taking into account the age specific need and requirement of the patient or family.

  • Recognize employees with Thanks for Caring, birthday, and anniversary cards. Coordinates department pot-lucks and staff meetings.

  • Monitors, orders, and directs stocking of all supplies necessary for phlebotomy / processing, and nursing floors.

Skills:

  • Technical:

  • Ability to perform blood specimen collections on infants, children and adults.

  • Ability to perform basic computer keyboard data entry.

  • Ability to problem solve within scope of training.

  • Interpersonal:

  • Ability to interact with other healthcare staff members in a professional courteous manner and demonstrates good communication / telephone skills.

  • Ability to understand and communicate orally and in writing.

  • Organizational:

  • Ability to provide directions to staff regarding assigned tasks as well as follow directions from the supervisor, ensuring that priority requests or tasks are carried out first and ability to complete remaining tasks within established time frames.

  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and maintain a pace appropriate to the workload.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Experience:

  • 1 year Experience as a Phlebotomist or Lab Assistant performing blood specimen collections.

  • Experience with specimen processing, centrifuging and handling send out specimens to other Laboratories.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current California State Certificate for a Certified Phlebotomy Technician l (CPT1).

  • American Heart Association CPR card.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 3 years Experience in blood specimen collections on infants, children, and adults in a hospital environment.

  • 1 year Experience coordinating operations of phlebotomy, lab assistants, or processing teams.
