Providence Director of Pharmacy, Montana Service Area in Missoula, Montana

THE ROLE

The Providence Montana Service Area Director of Pharmacy is a professionally competent, legally qualified pharmacist who is thoroughly knowledgeable about and has experience in respective pharmacy practice and management. The Service Area Director assists the Regional Executive Pharmacy Director (to whom they report) in providing oversight and comprehensive strategic alignment, oversight, design, optimization, and improvement of the region's pharmacy services offered.

The Service area Director will be based in Missoula, MT and manage the overall pharmacy operations in the service area assigned in collaboration with ministry senior managers/managers and lateral colleagues. The Service Area Director will also collaborate with broader regional leadership to assist in the development and implementation of system and regional strategic, safety, clinical, operational and other initiatives.

The Service Area Director will be responsible for improving the medication management system; regulatory compliance within their service area; will ensure quality outcomes through performance-improvement activities; lead drug utilization efforts; optimize the use of information systems and technology; manage the pharmaceutical supply chain, financial operations, Policy & Procedures and support managers and staff in achieving their goals and human resources needs including achieving acceptable caregiver engagement. The Service area director will have direct oversight and plays an important role in directly and/or indirectly supporting the ministry leaders in their respective service area.

In working with Providence leadership, will plan, organize and administer the activities of and be responsible for the overall operation of Pharmacy Services for the Montana Service Area (MTSA), including Providence St Patrick Hospital, Providence St. Joseph Hospital and the Outpatient Services (including the anti-coagulation and outpatient infusion clinics). Supports Pharmacy Residency Program.

Performs as or delegates to appropriate pharmacy leader(s) the "Responsible Manager" on record with the Montana Board of Pharmacy and will be responsible for the control of drugs used in the hospitals and clinics and will integrate pharmaceutical care into the total care of the patient. In alignment with the regional and system pharmacy strategic priorities, is responsible for the strategic engagement and oversight of pharmacy operations for MTSA. Will ensure the provision of safe, compliant, efficient, cost effective and quality pharmaceutical services, establish departmental goals and objectives, develop and assure professional standards, assist in administration of the Quality Assurance program and maintain a balanced budget.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Montana Service Area Director of Pharmacy will:

  • Develop an integrated process for aligning system, regional and local priorities by preparing and implementing a strategic plan for MTSA Pharmacy Services. Annually reviews and updates strategic plan to reflect changing customer needs and strategic opportunities. The Strategic Plan would include continued focus on standardization, advanced healthcare technologies including CPOE, medication safety and operating performance.

  • Develop mentoring relationships with MTSA pharmacy leaders (managers/supervisors).

  • Assure pharmacy IS support and representation at local, regional and system initiatives. Oversees the provision of quality pharmacy services in all hospitals, which includes meeting accreditation requirements and safety/infection control standards.

  • Ensure continued development and viability of pharmacy services. Establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders. Lead pharmacy management team in planning, organizing and responding to identified trends and creating opportunities for growth, development and improvement of services.

  • Oversee acute and ambulatory pharmacy leaders in ensuring strong operational performance and regulatory/accreditation compliance. This includes but is not limited to budgeting, expense control, coordinating regional policies and procedures and monitoring quality outcomes.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

Required experience/education for this position includes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy

  • Licensed as a Pharmacist in the State of Montana

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a Manager/Director of Pharmacy.

  • Two (2) years of experience in large hospital pharmacy operations.

Preferred experience/education for this position includes:

  • Master's Degree in Pharmacy, Health Administration, or Business Administration or PharmD
