We are looking for a Surgical Technologist for the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum Department at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center.

Location: Mission Viejo, CA

Work Schedule: Part time - 48 Biweekly Hours

Shift: 12-hour, Nights

Job Summary:

Under close supervision by the Labor and Delivery Charge Nurse, assesses, treats, and cares for neonate and adult mother and prepares for scheduled operations by arranging sterile set-up of instrument table. Assists surgeons by passing instruments and supplies, holding retractors, and anticipating surgeons' needs during course of surgery according to established procedure. Cleans operating room and stores equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions:

  • Passes appropriate instruments, sponges, sutures, and other sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures, demonstrating the ability to meet the developmental age-related needs of the specific population served. Holds retraction devices and acts to anticipate and respond to surgeons’ needs during course of surgery for all specialties. Initiates corrective action according to AORN recommended practices and hospital policy when breaks in aseptic technique occur. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Scrubs for cases according to established sterile procedures and changes into operative clothing; dons sterile gown and gloves, and assists surgeons with same. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Maintains adequate supplies in department for performing C-sections, vaginal deliveries, and care of all patient types based on established par levels. Stocks, organizes, and rotates supplies as needed. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Prepares for scheduled operative procedure by arranging sterile set-up of instrument table with linens, instruments and sutures required for specific procedures according to surgeons’ preference. Assists nurse with counting of sponges. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments used during surgery before closing, and assists with sterile dressing of operative site following closing in accordance with established policy. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Cleans operating room according to established procedures following each case by removing drapes, replacing hamper and trash bags, disposing of used supplies, cleaning and returning equipment to appropriate storage areas, and so forth. Assist anesthesiologist and nurse to post-op unit as necessary. Helps with room turnover to meet defined turnover time goals. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Washes delicate instruments requiring special handling and wraps instruments in preparation for gas or steam sterilizing as per established procedure, maintaining the principles of universal precautions. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Assists surgeons with draping and positioning patient as per established policy. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Receives surgical specimens, places in appropriate container, using universal precautions, confirms with physician, and notifies circulating nurse source of specimen. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Performs related clerical and service duties such as answering telephones, relaying messages, booking cases, transporting patient to and from surgery, requisitioning supplies, and other duties as assigned. Demonstrates the ability to perform behavioral competencies (generic & unit specific) as indicated on the competency inventory.

  • Keeps current regarding developments in surgical equipment, trends and techniques, through appropriate in-service programs.

Skills:

  • Ability to read and write, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions; interpersonal skills necessary to communicate information to staff and physicians; has knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of principles of asepsis and sterile technique; knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

  • Knowledge of obstetrical surgical procedures; knowledge of instrumentation required for these procedures.

  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to eighty percent of work time when setting up for procedures and when assisting in these procedures.

  • Proficient in required competencies upon completion of orientation, as listed on the unit specific competency inventory.

Minimum Position Requirements:

Education: Coursework/Training - Certificate of completion of formalized surgical technologist training program.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Healthcare Provider BLS.

  • CPR competency validation.

Preferred Position Qualifications:

Experience: 1 year OR experience in obstetrics.
