Providence Health & Services Registered Nurse - Stroke Care in Mission Hills, California

We are seeking a Stroke Nurse who will serve as an educator and program coordinator for the Providence Stroke Center specifically and the Medical Center in general. Demonstrates expertise in the assessment, treatment and care for stroke patients with knowledge of the special needs of the elderly. Must be competent to analyze patient data with the understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional/psychosocial, spiritual and chronological maturation process. Performs all duties in a manner that supports team concept, caring and respect, reflecting the philosophy of the Department of Nursing and the Sisters of Providence Mission.

In this position you will:

  • Work in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Stroke Center and the Director of Neurovascular Services to coordinate a stroke program according to the guidelines of the Joint Commission and ASA.

  • Participate in the certification process with the Joint Commission.

  • Work in collaboration with the Medical Director of the Stroke Center and the Director of Neurovascular Services to mentor an interdisciplinary team that oversees the care of all stroke inpatients.

  • Oversee the stroke database for all stroke admissions. Utilizes the stroke data as a tool to assess and address with performance improvement activities/research quality of care, outcomes, and cost effectiveness.

  • Coordinate, present, assess, and revise educational programs and resources to meet the continuing educational needs of nurses and ancillary disciplines within (and when applicable outside) the organization in the care of the stroke patient and family.

  • Demonstrate expertise in patient assessment, evaluation, and care planning.

  • Coordinate community education with professional organizations/AHA/ASA.

  • Coordinate with educators to present courses within the hospital.

  • Conduct educational needs assessments and collaborates on appropriate curriculum to meet those identified needs.

  • Coordinate programs for orientation, training and in-service, and continuing education.

  • Schedule classes, according to Medical Center priorities. Maintains required course documentation including accurate records of personnel attendance/participation in educational programs.

  • Participate in in-services and on-going competencies of the Medical Center staff and physicians.

  • Build relationships with individuals and groups from multiple areas of the Medical Center on health care delivery issues.

  • As a member of the multidisciplinary team collaborates in identifying and documenting needs for practice changes.

  • Assist with developing, maintaining, and updating hospital policies, procedures, and objectives as well as improving organization performance of the certified stroke program.

  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

  • Attend meetings as required, and participates on committees as directed.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Current California Licensed Registered Nurse

  • BLS for Healthcare Providers: sponsored by the American Heart Association. NOTE: If applicant has certification by the American Red Cross-CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, this will be accepted until card expiration date

  • Five (5) years current and appropriate clinical experience in nursing with an emphasis on stroke care and neurology

  • Clinical experience in nursing with an emphasis on stroke care and neurology.

  • Ability to coordinate and direct an interdisciplinary health care team.

  • Ability to develop quality programs for the application of new knowledge and technology with effective utilization of resources.

  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time; is self-directing.

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with the nursing staff and health care team.

  • Ability to establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.

  • Effective problem solving skills.

  • Ability to establish vision for nursing and quality patient care.

  • Ability to effectively plan for change.

  • Ability to develop collaborative partnership with Nurse Managers, Clinical Development Specialists, and Educators of the Neuro/Vascular and Med-Surg Units, Intensive and Cardiac Care Units, and Emergency Department, as well as ancillary department Managers, physicians, nursing staff and health care team.

  • Ability to work with Nursing Administration Dept., ED, ICU, Neuro unit – the various tiers of educators, directors, etc.

  • Knowledge and skill in education of both healthcare professionals and patients – formal and informal education - and program planning.

  • Skill in the application of quality improvement methods and concepts.

  • Ability to utilize outcome data and research in development of “best practices.”

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Applicable field

  • Course work in areas of adult education and quality improvement or equivalent educ/experience

  • Certification in Neuroscience

  • Management/coordination of inpatient care program.
