We are seeking a Financial Counselor to:
Be the ministry resource for knowledge on all insurance benefit types, payment plans, liability estimation, government programs, and financial assistance options
Maintain a thorough knowledge of all programs, share information, and act as a resource for Patient Access Specialists and vendors (if applicable), Case Management, Ministry Financial Leadership, and RCS Leadership
Complete all initial patient screenings and counsels patients on available programs
Initiate, submit, and follow up on all applications for any program and pursues timely and accurate resolution of pending cases prior to discharge
Complete end to end account management
Work closely and regularly with clinical care team to follow up on in-house patients whose financial situation is unclear or has changed since the time of admission
Serve patients in a professional, friendly, and respectful manner to promote sacred encounters
Human Development Knowledge / Skills:

Ability to explain payor benefits
Comfortable using appropriate voice elevation, repeating information and having compassion and understanding
In this position you will:
Maintain a current knowledge of all government and community financial assistance programs, including eligibility and application process
Interview patients and/or representative by telephone or bedside to secure all demographic and financial data necessary to evaluate patient’s eligibility for medical assistance, financial assistance programs and other payment options include past balances or bad debt
Work with patients to complete any necessary paperwork or documentation for application or acceptance to any of the following programs: COBRA, Workers’ Compensation, and state and local medical assistance programs
Evaluate needs and educate patients regarding potential financial assistance eligibility and the process for application; assist patients with the completion of the financial assistance application process
Perform other complex financial counseling functions (e.g., extended payment arrangements)
Submit complete applications and supporting documentation to the appropriate agencies
Analyze and escalate potential patient financial counseling issues
Facilitate the collection of documentation, track the status and work with patients who have applied for financial assistance or government programs and have not submitted completed forms prior to discharge
Meet regularly with Case Management to review status of in-house patients and take action to ensure that patients with less than full financial coverage receive financial counseling
Collaborate with Nursing Units and clinical care team to determine patient’s medical and mental condition prior to visiting patient in room
Document all communication with patient, payor and/or clinical care team in the system of record
Answer any question posed by a patient related to a billing or financial issue
Schedule appointments and facilitate meetings with patients and/or representative to collect missing information and obtain signatures
Develop strong working relationships with representatives from government agencies, including state aid workers and other eligibility representatives (i.e. HASC), and RCS Eligibility Unit to ensure speedy resolution of cases pending approval and provide any needed documentation to the agency representatives
Address sensitive financial situations with patients, who are experiencing significant health challenges and stress
Serve as a subject matter expert for any and all financial counseling functions in the ministry
Serve as the ambassador between the hospital and all patients and visitors, promoting a customer-friendly environment
Review own work for accuracy and completeness prior to end of shift
Meet productivity, point of service collections, and quality goals/standards
Adhere to state and federal regulations
Identify and alert a member of the management staff of any situation that may negatively impact the patient, department operations, public relations, or the hospital's integrity
Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
2 years hospital experience specific to patient registration, financial clearance, financial counseling, or self-pay collections
Experience in medical management computer applications
Ten-key touch
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
5 years Registration experience
Familiarity with basic financial clearance functions
Ten-key touch
Bilingual English/Spanish
