THE ROLE

The Chief Clinical Executive (CCE) has regional cross continuum oversight of clinical care delivery; including strategic planning and direction for all clinical services such as Medicine, Nursing, Quality, Infection Prevention, Clinical Institutes, Care Coordination, Clinical Operations, Care Management, Social Services, & Clinical Documentation. Also, serves as liaison to the medical staff and aligned medical group leadership.

This CCE is a key member of the Providence Southern California Senior Leadership team ensuring that clinical considerations inform all strategic decisions. Responsibilities include substantial coordination of quality, patient safety, community health (this is usually handled by a separate group) and physician services in concert with the hospital and ambulatory operations leaders. The CCE participates with other leaders in the coordination, development and growth of all aligned providers to enhance affordability, access, quality and the reduction of variability across Providence. The CCE’s responsibilities include key integration strategies with providers, Providence Health Network (PHN), hospitals, ambulatory services and clinical programs to better meet the needs of the communities we serve.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Chief Clinical Executive – Providence Southern California will be accountable for:

  • Being a demonstrated mission/ministry senior leader who actively supports and incorporates the Mission and Core Values into daily activities of programs and services. Treating all others with respect and demonstrates through leadership excellence, justice, and compassion in daily work and relationships with others. Maintaining the ability to articulate the mission of the Providence St. Joseph’s Health System to employees, physicians, and other providers and groups.

  • Working with other entities within the Southern California region to assist in recruiting key clinical leaders.

  • Establishing clear clinical operations and quality improvement priorities that cascade across the continuum.

  • Collaborating across clinical and operational leaders to ensure effective communication and execution of quality improvement priorities.

  • Advising Regional leaders on clinical and risk issues.

  • Executing strategies for clinicians in clinical programs and centers of excellence to develop and implement evidence based care pathways and guidelines to ensure highly reliable, high quality and highly satisfying care in the right setting at the right time.

  • Setting parameters, assisting in the negotiation and administration of hospital-based provider contracts, compensation and benefits including performance evaluations.

  • Evaluating and developing growth opportunities and provider business development opportunities.

  • Regulatory compliance, data security and other areas of risk management in areas of accountability.

  • Strategic growth and development in areas of responsibility.

  • Maintaining and assuring the confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, employees, and as appropriate, other information.

  • Supporting the activities of the Regional Clinical Institutes within Southern California in collaboration with the CMO, Clinical Institutes and the Ministry Chief Executives.

  • Reducing clinical variation across the continuum of care.

  • Integrating transformative changes and standardized clinical practices into care delivery in the region.

  • Actively participating in the System-level strategic discussions on the Quality Strategic Plan, Information System integration, System Clinical Council and other areas as requested by System leadership.

  • Demonstrating service excellence and positive interpersonal relations in dealing with others, including patients/families/members, employees, managers, medical staff, volunteers and community members, so that productivity and positive relations are maximized.

  • Determining and implementing the organizational structure required to direct and manage cross continuum clinical care services in the region and unifying the physician and nursing leaders into one common accountable leadership group.

  • Developing networks and relationships with community leaders, board members, all providers to enhance the health services provided to individuals and communities.

  • Providing vision, leadership, organization skills, developmental skills, and management skills to all aligned providers and caregivers within the region.

  • Providing leadership and oversight to assure improvement in the Quality and Patient Safety performance in the Providence Southern California Region in areas where core leaders, providers and caregivers have influence. Assuring the appropriate use of metrics and evidence-based guidelines.

  • Identifying and developing clinical leaders for leadership roles with increasing responsibility in the region.

  • Maintaining the ability to lead complex organizations through a transition process to create one integrated organization. Problem-solver who involves others in key decisions but assures timely decisions are made.

  • Maintaining the ability to educate others about the process of change and the necessity of change.

  • Maintaining the ability to establish relationships with diverse groups; possessing strong communication, and good listening skills.

  • Maintaining broad knowledge and understanding of the trends and changes taking place in health care and their implications; provides guidance and advice on a local and national level on health care reform legislation.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

The CCE must be a licensed MD or DO with a valid license to practice Medicine in the State of California (required). At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience and responsibilities in a health system is required with an emphasis on standardization and implementation of innovative care models, practice transformation, highly reliable clinical quality, and patient and employee safety. At least five years of experience as a leading executive in a large complex operation (region or system) is essential.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for a candidate to be successful in this position include:
