THE ROLE

Serving as a key member of the Service Area leadership team, the Executive Director, Strategy & Business Development is a leadership position assisting the Regional Executive Director to develop, evaluate, and implement critical business strategies of enterprise-wide impact throughout Providence St. Joseph Health, Southern California. These strategies will support and advance the PSJH System and Southern California Region's overall strategic and programmatic goals, including:

  • Serve more patients in Southern CA

  • Establish PSJH as the partner of choice

  • Move Upstream in the value chain

  • Enable new delivery models and revenue opportunities

This position will be responsible for leading complex, large scale projects including strategic and business planning, clinical program development across the continuum, physician alignment and integration strategies, strategic affiliations and partnerships, market analytics and expansion initiatives, and strong coordination with System shared services teams. The Executive Director will conduct market research and best practices, analyze business trends and technology developments, and develop strategic and business plans. The Executive Director will lead and facilitate multidisciplinary teams across Orange County and advise the Chief Strategy Officer / Regional Executive Director, Chief Clinical Programs & Operations, Chief Integration Officer, and Senior Leadership on key issues and initiatives of region-wide impact.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead Providence SoCal’s annual strategic and business planning cycle and framework, including developing tools and templates to prepare business plans, track and monitor implementation progress.

  • Lead, evaluate, develop and facilitate implementation of strategic and business plans to support regional, ministry and market-specific growth plans, new clinical programs and services, and innovative models of care across the continuum, including market and environmental assessments, operational and capital requirements, and performance tracking and measurement.

  • Provide project leadership and leads the implementation of complex, large multidisciplinary projects including defining project structure; identifying key participants; developing project management tracking tools; facilitating meetings; developing communication plans; analyzing, organizing and interpreting data; preparing dashboards and metrics to measure and track performance.

  • Conduct market and customer segmentation research to understand various customer needs (consumer, payers, employers, etc.); Lead the identification of strategies and designs products to better serve their needs.

  • Lead market assessments and determines areas of opportunity/threat across the continuum. Based on analyses, develop recommendations for program and service development or expansion; work closely with the System LOBs, Ministry and Medical Foundation leadership teams in executive strategic planning activities and analysis to identify opportunities for new business, marketing efforts, and strategic acquisitions.

  • Evaluate and support the development of strategic affiliations, joint ventures and partnerships with other organizations, including due diligence and deal structuring.

  • In partnership with Finance, lead development of pro forma and ROI analysis for new joint venture and other new business partnerships to evaluate stewardship/profitability.

  • Create and engage high performing teams around development and implementation of key initiatives with limited direct line authority for implementation staff; gain trust and build strong relationships across the Region, Ministries and System.

  • Identify community needs and environmental trends; monitor evolving health care trends and new technologies to identify potential market opportunities and impact on existing programs and services.

  • Develop market intelligence reports on market and competitor activities.

  • Prepare and deliver presentations to System, Region and Ministry leadership on strategic and business planning initiatives, market trends, and other related topics.

  • Serve as Southern California’s connection to the System Digital & Innovation team. Lead local pilots and implementation of key system initiatives and new technologies while connecting System leadership to new companies/innovative opportunities that surface in the Southern California market.

  • Lead deployment of new clinical tools, technologies, and delivery models to drive the consumer/patient experience.

  • Represent PSJH externally at healthcare industry or innovation events, panels, and forums in the region.

  • Other similar duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required experience and education for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Master's Degree

  • 10 or more years of leadership experience within a health system or consulting firm at a leadership level with demonstrated success in strategic planning and program development

  • Significant subject matter expertise in business strategy, innovation, and new healthcare models and technologies

  • 10 or more years of experience in leading teams, group facilitation, and project management

  • Strong history of experience in an innovative, multi-site regionally integrated health system is required

  • Proven history of leading large organizational change across multiple functional departments in a matrixed organization

  • Proven ability to identify potential business opportunities, prepares business plans, coordinate proforma development, conduct and analyze market research and benchmarking best practices,

  • Ability to conduct and interpret quantitative and qualitative analytical data including the preparation of interpretation financial data including developing operating and capital budgets

  • Demonstrated bias for action by independently leading complex, multidisciplinary projects involving people from various departments and organizations to successful completion

  • Proven ability to integrate strategic planning initiatives across matrixed organizations

  • Demonstrated experience and success developing and implementing innovative program growth strategies, physician and payer alignment, and consumer engagement models in a highly competitive and complex market environment

  • Traits of a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills, a track record of developing collaborative and effective working relationships with physicians, clinicians, management, colleagues and peers; ability to motivate, lead and influence others to implement key strategies

  • Knowledge and understanding of emerging health care, market and technology trends, including forces influencing the growth, utilization and delivery of health care services

  • Ability to navigate and succeed in a complex matrix structured organization, accurately assesses the potential barriers and resources necessary for change; challenges the status quo and takes personal ownership for leading change that enhances the organization; inspires others to think positively about change

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and credibility with high level Region, System, and Ministry executives is critical to success in this role

  • Demonstrated track record of bringing great ideas to fruition through the alignment of ideas, people and processes; incorporates new methods or approaches to solving problems; cultivates alternative viewpoints; actively seeks varied perspectives when problem solving

  • Expertise in using business intelligence tools (including Trilliant, Sg2, etc.) including benchmarking best practices, data tracking and monitoring outcomes; experience developing and implementing balanced scorecards

  • Exceptionally well-developed and effective written, verbal, and presentation skills and the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization

  • Knowledge of the health care industry with demonstrated knowledge of health care operations across the continuum of care, health insurance, population heath management and accountable care organizations

  • Deep knowledge of the Southern California market, both providers, emerging organizations, start-ups, and healthcare consumers

Preferred experience and education for this position include:

  • Experience in entrepreneurial or start-up environments

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have worked in an integrated health system similar to Providence St. Joseph Health.
