Providence Health & Services Senior Clinical Informatics Architect - PSJH in Beaverton, Oregon


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Senior Clinical Informatics (CI) Architect to one of the following locations: Portland OR, Beaverton OR, Medford OR, Seattle WA, Renton WA, Everett WA, Olympia WA, Spokane WA, Richland WA, Missoula MT, Anchorage AK, Burbank CA, Anaheim CA, Torrance CA or Santa Rosa CA.

We are seeking a Senior Clinical Informatics (CI) Architect to be accountable for working with assigned specialty practice area and/or discipline specific clinical users and operational leaders to support implementation, optimization and adoption of integrated information systems, including the electronic health record (EHR.) This position provides expertise in clinical information systems, clinical workflow analysis, and data management to define, execute, and measure EHR adoption, optimization and enhancement in service to safety, quality, usability, efficiency, and the patient experience. The CI Architect will apply clinical informatics principles in guiding and directing potential solutions through the use of information technology applications.

The CI Architect demonstrates proficiency with the Organization’s EHR(s), collateral applications, and biomedical devices used by assigned specialty practice areas/clinical disciplines. The CI Architect leads the assigned specialty/discipline EHR informatics governance, facilitates user group(s) and provides expert consultation and collaboration to both their assigned clinical/operational teams and to the greater Informatics organization.

The CI Architect partners with informatics, clinical and operational leaders to develop and monitor impact analysis of EHR on assigned specialty area and/or discipline. The CI Architect is accountable for identification, facilitation, and coordination of clinician input into EHR optimization and improvement initiatives.

The CI Architect serves as a clinical translator, representing and communicating voices and perspectives of assigned specialty practice area/clinical disciplines to optimize the EHR and support clinical practice. The CI Architect assures that within the EHR:

  • Evidence based practice is facilitated

  • Multidisciplinary languages and standards of practice are integrated

  • Informatics principles related to EHR design and implementation are applied

  • System and process design achieves Health System objectives of standardization, integration, and workflow efficiency; as well as, promoting the highest possible patient care quality and safety while supporting compliance with regulatory requirements

The CI Architect provides oversight of the development, implementation and evaluation of related education and communications

The CI Architect provides System sponsorship for EHR and workflow optimization to enhance patient care, quality, safety, productivity, and revenue capture and outcome measurements for assigned specialty area and/or discipline.

The CI Architect is a change leader and serves as a positive, progressive, professional role model. The incumbent performs all duties in a manner that promotes an interdisciplinary team concept and reflects the PSJH (Providence St Joseph Health) mission, vision, values, and philosophy.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Lead discussions and planning in assigned specialty areas related to implementation, use, optimization, and enhancement of the EHR and related tools and technologies in clinical settings. Leads forums/user groups where clinicians’ change requests or enhancements are vetted and approved to go before EHR governance bodies. Lead EHR optimization review and provide recommendations to appropriate EHR governance bodies. Work with release managers and application optimization teams to plan, execute communicate and implement approved enhancements.

  • Collaborate with Clinical Program Services, Clinical Decision Teams, Hospital and Clinic Operations, Regional and System Informatics teams, Clinical Stakeholders and the Epic Clinical Optimization program to identify, understand, translate, organize, prioritize and lead enhancements of the EHR relevant to the clinical domains they represent, ensuring the organization's full interdisciplinary team has a direct influence in the ongoing development and optimization of the EHR.

  • Provide Informatics leadership and “system’s thinking” in clinical workflow and system process improvement to enhance clinical outcomes, caregiver satisfaction and efficiency, the patient's care experience and cost effectiveness.

  • Lead system optimization discovery, design, build, validation, implementation and metric reporting for assigned specialty areas, disciplines and service lines. Lead cross functional teams in the testing of optimizations to ensure achievement of design intent and help ensure usability for assigned specialty areas and/or disciplines.

  • Collaborate with region and system informatics teams, clinical and operational leaders to develop and monitor impact analysis of EHR on assigned specialty area and/or discipline. Consult with organizational leaders on compliance issues regarding use of EHR(s).

  • Execute optimization and enhancement activities relating to the EHR clinical applications content, workflows, processes and procedures, including, but not limited to: End user change requests; System Clinical Program initiatives; EHR update and upgrade enhancements; compliance-related changes; best practices and interfaces.

  • Partner with project managers, application teams, clinical informatics team members, and operational/clinical leaders to ensure efficient and effective EHR training and adoption.

  • Develop and maintain standard documentation of system design and best practice workflow processes ensuring documentation is complete and current.

  • Provide knowledge and expert coaching to others in support of organizational change management, EHR development, implementation and adoption.

  • Escalate critical issues, problems or delays in production, projects or any issues that has a negative impact on patients or clinicians.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor's Degree in clinical discipline such as Nursing, information technology/informatics, business management, education or related field.

  • Eight (8) years in a position that had the same or similar primary duties working with a clinical information system within a healthcare field.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's Degree in clinical discipline such as Nursing, information technology/informatics, business management, education or related field.

  • Active license or certification to practice as a clinician, as applicable. (MD, RN, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Dietitian, Clinical Social Worker, Respiratory Therapist, etc.)

  • Certification in EHR clinical application.

  • Certification in clinical/healthcare informatics.
