Providence is calling an Epic ECSA Application Engineering SME to Providence Health & Services in Beaverton, OR.
We are seeking an Epic ECSA Application Engineering SME to manage, analyze, architect and engineer the client, server and delivery infrastructure for Epic applications across the enterprise. This position has multiple levels. This position will have some operational work, but will be more focused on designing, implementation and supporting the client-server systems environment for Epic Windows Services Servers and client software such as Interconnect, Hyperspace, EPS, Web BLOB, Hyerspace Web and other Epic Windows based applications. The SME will also assist other Epic 3rd party applications teams with their integration into Epic as needed which can include assisting with the design, architecture and documentation. Working at local, regional and enterprise levels the Subject Matter Expert strives towards the common goal of application performance, standardization, automation and efficiency. Additional knowledge of the inner workings of Epic systems, outside of the Windows based applications, is also needed.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Has a comprehensive view of the whole of Epic Windows applications, infrastructure and the 3rd party applications that are intimately connected including, not simply with each other within Epic, but with the other infrastructure technologies that Epic relies upon. This includes Windows OS, virtual networks, load balancing VIPs, firewalls, storage and other technologies. It also includes some Cache knowledge, and familiarity with running commands at the Cache command line. Performs complex tasks related to Epic Windows operations, installation, and/or maintenance.
Participate in cross-functional efforts to resolve complex technical issues, chronic problems, and technology integration challenges being experienced throughout the enterprise or having a major impact within an application or area. Performs complex and methodical troubleshooting and diagnoses, and implements solutions to assure all Epic Windows related problems are resolved.
When possible, in areas of expertise, will lead the development of standards for the enterprise that further enhance the delivery of Epic and other applications. Work with technology and application teams to ensure Epic application and infrastructure changes are communicated to the necessary teams across the region or enterprise.
Functions as the technical expert for Epic Windows applications with special focus on those applications in the ECSA pillar. Is able to set technical priorities and solve complex technical problems. Possesses knowledge of multiple systems and business applications. Evaluates vendor products for technical soundness and economic feasibility. Technically/professionally competent, up to date in his/her field; knows the job very well.
Prepare, install, upgrade and/or distribute Epic applications on servers and clients including printing, faxing, imaging, business continuity systems, monitoring, web servers, communication systems and end user access.
Perceives new problems or tackles unsolved problems, and develops new procedural solutions which result in their successful solution. Develops new ideas that increase profitability or enhance operations and then document it whether it be for other technology teams, end users or the Service Desk teams.
Required qualifications for this position include:
A minimum of six (6) years of technical leadership experience, and eight (8) years total relevant IT experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience

Must learn and maintain a thorough understanding of current Epic developments and trends in Epic client systems under the ECSA tier as well as other Epic 3rd party apps that interact with Epic.
Extensive knowledge of the Windows operating systems as well as other client operating systems especially in a virtualized environment (Citrix and VMware). Fully understands system and kernel components and printing components, registry and general Windows OS performance and reliability tuning especially those unique to individual applications.
Expertise in how applications interoperate with servers, clients and the underlying IT infrastructure and their relationship with performance and uptime, especially in a Citrix XenApp environment. Leadership in discovering, and advancing to the enterprise, new technologies that improve application performance, standardization and uptime. Ability to review, analyze and recommend changes regarding documented standards, policies and procedures.
Ability to comprehend software and hardware upgrades, and release notes that also includes an understanding of the ramifications of these upgrades, either good or bad. Must be able to develop goals and objectives and associated work plan with little to no oversight from management to schedule the successful implementation of these upgrades.
Extensive knowledge of Windows OS and enterprise networking concepts (DNS, WINS, DHCP, VPN, etc.) and how to leverage these technologies to support enterprise client systems. High degree of familiarity with network protocols (TCP, UDP, HTTP, FTP, SNMP, LDAP, etc) and their implications within an enterprise environment. Knowledge of IP-based networks and routing and firewall concepts. Advanced experience with Citrix XenApp and Netscaler administration, upgrades and performance tuning.
Ability to comprehend software and hardware upgrades and release notes that also includes an understanding of the ramifications of these upgrades either good or bad. Must be able to develop goals and objectives and associated work plan with little to no oversight from management to schedule the successful implementation of these upgrades.
Experience with advanced networking concepts and experience in applying these concepts with the goal of increasing performance and reliability. Some examples include creating Citrix Netscaler VIPs with up/down probes, packet inspection for routing and intrusion prevention decisions and Windows OS routing from multiple NICs. Knowing techniques for passing traffic between independent networks is also needed. Must be comfortable using tools like Procmon, Wireshark and Fiddler. SAN and NAS experience is also required.
Must have experience in automating processes using scripting technologies such as Powershell, Java Scripts and C . Experience using these automations for task such as gathering data, monitoring systems and streamlining installations.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Management, Information Services or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience Or equivalent educ/experience.
5 years Epic ECSA (and other Epic Certifications preferred).
3 years Citrix NetScaler.
5 years Citrix XenApp.
4 years Scripting.
