Providence Health & Services Registered Dietitian - Diabetes and Nutrition Center in Anchorage, Alaska
Providence is calling a Registered Dietitian (Diabetes Clinic, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:
STANDARDS: Ensures that medical nutrition therapy is evidence-based practice in accordance with current standards and as outlined in the Nutrition Care Manual updated semi-annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Diabetes Association (ADA Develops or assists with review of departmental policies and procedures. Remains current with updated standards of medical nutrition care through self-learning and continuing education programs.
ASSESSMENT: Assess medical nutrition therapy needs based upon the patient’s medical diagnosis, laboratory values, anthropometric measures, medications, age-specific requirements, and other co-morbidity factors identified by the registered dietitian or other member of the health care team.
PROFESSIONAL RESOURCE: Acts as a resource to all members of the health care team, including dietetic interns/students, nursing students and family practice residents related to the establishment of appropriate nutrition care standards, and the determination of realistic goals for optimal patient outcome. Acts as a preceptor for dietetic interns enrolled in the University of Alaska Dietetic Internship program.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: In collaboration with others, assesses the nutritional needs of the community and plan, develop, and implement the nutritional aspects of programs/presentations to meet needs identified. Provides direct education and/or coordination of programs. Assist with developing and evaluating nutrition education materials.
PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Establish work priorities to ensure smooth work flow and patient interaction, Responsible for nutrition education when medical nutrition therapy is an integral part of overall medical care. When working as inpatients; screens all patients and determine each patient's nutrition risk. Based upon this initial screen, perform nutrition assessment and develop nutrition plan of care for all patients at moderate or high risk.
DOCUMENTATION: Accurately determine and documents plan of care and outcomes in the medical record using accepted charting formats and forms. Responsible for communication of nutrition recommendations, plans, and needs to all members of the health care team. Documents ongoing follow-up of nutritional care plan and additional interventions instituted. Documents productivity by charging patient for appropriate time and documenting activities per departments standards, reports any deviations to the Clinical Nutrition Manager in a timely manner. Gather patient data for clinical studies as needed.
CONSULTATION: Provides one to one diabetes and medical nutrition therapy consultation individually tailored to the patient's specific condition and home situation. COMMUNICATION: Strong communication skills critical to managing interactions with a wide variety of people from differing literacy levels, languages, and cultures. Written skills necessary for documentation in the medical record, as well as providing written information for home use. Prepares and presents in-service training for dietary, nutrition staff, and interdisciplinary staff throughout the service area.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor's Degree in Food and Nutrition or related field and Successful completion of a dietetic internship program
Continuing education in accordance with policies determined by the American Dietetic Association for maintenance of registered status
Current registration as Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration
Licensure in accordance with the laws of the State of Alaska
BLS required within 90 days of hire
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)
1 year clinical experience.
