Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Ministry Chief Philanthropy Officer to Orange County, CA

This is an unparalleled opportunity for a Ministry, Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO). The CPO reports to the Chief Executive, while leading the Foundation Team. The incumbent is responsible for the overall development, coordination, facilitation and administration of all fundraising/philanthropy programs. S/he sets the strategic direction, establishes goals and objectives with clear milestones and procedures for achieving high levels of philanthropy to make a meaningful impact to St. Jude Medical Center. S/he will serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, ensuring that the Foundation Fundraising activities are developed in line with the strategic goals of the organization and the Providence St. Joseph Health Region.

As a key partner to the Chief Executive and the Foundation Board of Directors, the CPO will lead the St. Jude Medical Center Foundation, guide and engage the Board of Directors, lead and manage the fundraising team, develop and implement a strategic plan to impact fundraising on all levels, create the right organizational structure to support philanthropy focus on the key organizational priorities and initiatives, and serve as a known and trusted member of the communities served. The CPO is also expected to serve as a brand ambassador for St. Jude Medical Center, emboldening a goal of driving great confidence in St. Jude to various stakeholders in the philanthropic community with a compelling case for support.

In addition, the CPO will serve as the Chief Fundraiser. This will come with the responsibility of securing major gifts, along with personally managing a portfolio of major and planned giving donor prospects.

Ideally, the CPO will work in concert with the Vice President of Philanthropy for Providence St. Joseph Health, collaboratively with other Chief Philanthropy Officers throughout the system, and directly with Chief Development Officers in the LA/OC/HD region.

In this position you will:

  • Function as a visionary, strategic thinker in setting the strategic and annual operating plan to achieve the Foundation’s goals.

  • Cultivate teams to achieve a high degree of success in executing the strategic plan and delivering on results.

  • Develop and administer the Foundation’s budget relative to its operating and strategic plans.

  • Construct annual tactical goals, objectives and performance metrics, along with key indicators to track the Foundation’s success.

  • Create, secure the approval of, and successfully implement effective short and long range strategic philanthropic plans designed to enable the hospital in fulfilling its mission and achieve its strategic objectives through increased philanthropic support.

  • Plan and implement Capital Campaigns, Comprehensive Campaigns, Endowment Campaigns, Annual Giving Campaigns, Major Gift Solicitations, Fundraising Events and Planned Giving Programs, with effective planning and drive to establish results.

  • Maintain a professional contact with community organizations, other institutions, associations and organizations that affect hospital development programs.

  • Preserve open communication with other foundation executives and staff within the Providence St. Joseph Health System to ensure that the exchange of ideas and information will help promote success in all foundations.

  • Be responsible for supporting the realization of regional Fund Development Goals.

  • Effectively work together with the Foundation Board of Directors in their responsibilities as the fundraising arm of the hospital.

  • Develop an effective structure for the Board, ensuring that the group will be able to achieve its goals and priorities, consistent with the philanthropy strategic plan.

  • Assist the board in the creation and implementation of policies and procedures that will guarantee the utilization of the most effective, economical and ethical methods of fundraising.

  • Organize the Board for maximum efficiency and ensure that Board Members’ time and talents are well-used to make an optimal philanthropic impact. When needed, recruit new board members.

  • Form an effective St. Joseph Hospital Brand ambassador strategy (through the foundation board and beyond) to enable broad and compelling donor and community influencer confidence in the brand and value of St. Joseph Hospital’s support of philanthropy.

  • Be responsible for the comprehensive leadership of the Foundation’s planned estate giving program, overseeing the planned giving professional staff, the identification of qualified prospects, the establishment of industry appropriate metrics, the marketing of planned giving as a vehicle of support, and the execution of gifts in support of the funding priorities of St. Jude Medical Center.

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Management Team to collaboratively work with the senior leadership team and medical staff leaders in identifying organizational priorities, relative to clinical program development and capital needs.

  • Confer with the appropriate hospital leadership in identifying key organizational needs to develop presentations, case statements, and compelling stories for support from prospective donors.

  • Work closely with the marketing department to ensure consistent brand identity in philanthropic efforts, along with directing the preparation of all printed materials.

  • Provide leadership to all Foundation and Volunteer Services staff.

  • Conduct interviews, hires, training, direction, and evaluations in hopes of maximizing the overall performance/effectiveness of the Foundation Staff.

  • Be responsible for the formation of major gift prospects for the medical center and for the maintenance of existing relationships with existing donors to the medical center.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field

  • A minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in Managing and Directing Fund Development Programs.

  • Participation in courses relative to Fund Development.

  • Extensive knowledge of Philanthropy, Major/Planned Gifts, Grant Proposal preparation, as well as Accounting and Statistics.

  • Strong strategic skills with the ability to develop, articulate and communicate a strategic vision to the Board, Staff, Community and Hospital Leadership Team.

  • Evidential success in running a Comprehensive Fund Development Organization, including Significant Capital Campaigns, Annual Giving, Planned Giving, Fundraising Events, Transformational Gifts and Major Gifts/Grants Procurement.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills to effectively and persuasively deal with a variety of influential internal and external contacts when eliciting cooperation and support for the medical center.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills to lead the Board of Directors, Volunteers, and Staff.

  • Advanced analytical skills to determine effective fund development strategies.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in a related field (MBA, MHA, etc.)

  • Certification by the National Society for Fund Raising Executives.
