Providence Health & Services Clinical Data Specialist - Cancer Registrar in Santa Monica, California


Providence is calling a full time, day shift Clinical Data Specialist to Providence Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA.

In this position you will:

  • Under the supervision of the Cancer Registry Supervisor and with functional guidance from the Clinical Data Specialist, the Cancer Registry Support Specialist (CRSS) supports the abstracting procedures by performing case finding and creating a suspense list, prepares abstract by validating and updating demographics, researching and gathering treatment information ready to be coded by the CTR’s and maintains follow-up on all living patients. Code user defined fields to track completion of all abstracts.

  • Perform annual follow-up on all living patients and to determine disease status, code recurrence and enter subsequent treatment.

  • Provide support for Cancer Committee and Tumor Board

  • Review patient documentation and diagnostic information to identify, register

  • Maintain records on all cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated in this hospital.

  • Monitor disease progression through annual follow-up.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Successful completion of education program as defined by the National Cancer Registrars’ Association.

  • Knowledge of medicine and related fields, including anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

  • Familiar with computer data entry.

  • Working knowledge of Windows, Word, and Excel and must be able to learn electronic documentation systems.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and organization skills. Requires great attention to detail.

  • Ability to meet deadlines for abstracting and data requests.

  • Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with physicians, as well as the ability to tactfully communicate with patients when necessary.

  • Ability to prioritize work and manage time.

  • Ability to conduct and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Ability to accurately and efficiently enter cancer-related data into Metriq.

  • Certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) from the National Cancer Registrars’ Associationor CTR eligible.

  • CTR certification required within two years of hire.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Three years of experience working with a cancer registry in an approved CoC cancer program.
