Providence Health & Services Database Developer in Renton, Washington


Providence is calling a Database Developer to Providence Health & Services in Renton, WA, Olympia, WA, Beaverton, OR or Portland, OR.

We are seeking a Database Developer to perform traditional duties of a Database Administrator (DBA), as well as designs and implements databases across the organization, while ensuring high levels of data availability and security. This individual is responsible for advising on standards and models for database architectures. The Database Developer will collaborate with others to evaluate and select technology components, such as software, hardware, and networking capabilities, for database management systems and applications in accordance with Providence standards. They will also collaborate with various IS teams to manipulate data in several different systems. This position adheres to the enterprise concepts of data resource management. This position interacts collaboratively with data and system Analysts, other developers and server engineers in facilitating projects and providing feedback to change management and architectural review methodologies. The DBA/Database Developer performs duties in a manner that promotes team concepts, and reflects the Providence Health & Services mission, philosophy, and core values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship.

In this position you will:

  • Install and configure the database software (i.e.; Oracle, SQL Server or InterSystems Caché).

  • Plan, schedule and implement database upgrades and patches.

  • Provide database support for software development or application projects.

  • Participate in 24 x 7 on call rotation as needed.

  • Configure the database software to adhere or comply with Providence technical and business standards.

  • Design, develop, implement, and optimize database systems for high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery as required by customer SLA’s.

  • Plan, design, and configure the logical and physical database environment.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Information Services, Computer Science, Engineering, Database Development, Database Administration or similar field)

  • Training in relational database management system (RDBMS) administration and a standard SQL language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, or similar.

  • 5 years of industry related experience. Industry related means Information Services, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Database Development, Database Administration, etc.

  • At least 2 years of experience in RDBMS administration in a 24x7 enterprise environment as a senior member of the team.

  • Should have knowledge of several object-to-relational mapping strategies along with the performance trade-offs of each.

  • Possess knowledge of/experience in, Database replication/synchronization techniques, Gathering business requirements for new databases, High availability systems, 24 x 7 systems, Healthcare systems, HIPAA, ICD-10 Regulations, Use of tools such as TOAD, ERWIN, ER Studio, for logical and physical data modeling, reverse engineering, Load balancing with database servers and Database concurrency solutions

  • Knowledge of both Object and Relational databases.

  • Design and implementation of fault tolerant systems.

  • A combination of experience and education will be considered.

  • Successful completion of at least one RDMS professional certification exam (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or Cache) not more than a year old preferred.

  • Advanced understanding of source code repositories and version control.

  • Well-developed ability to understand complex customer business needs that support and impact organizational objectives, mission, and core values

  • Good understanding of algorithms and programming constructs.

  • Demonstrated independent and complex problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in writing complex database objects in T-SQL and/or PL/SQL.

  • Proficient in MS Office suite products.

  • Exercises discretion, sensitivity, tact and respect for confidentiality at all times.

  • Demonstrated understanding of software development lifecycles and testing methodologies.

  • Demonstrated excellence in creative problem solving in an engineering environment.

  • Demonstrated competency in resolution of operational technical support issues.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Budget management skills.
