Providence Health & Services Mental Health Professional Therapist - Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry in Oregon City, Oregon


Providence is calling Mental Health Professional Therapists to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center in Oregon City, OR.

The Providence Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Unit (CAPU) has inpatient treatment programs for children ages 3 through 17. Our programs are developmentally age-appropriate and flexible to individual need while incorporating various modalities of care. Family involvement is encouraged during treatment as well as with care planning and discharge planning.

The Mental Health Professional Therapist (MHPT) is a member of the interdisciplinary team that is comprised of Chaplains, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Mental Health Specialists, Social Workers and other caregivers. The MHPTs primary responsibilities are facilitating therapeutic groups and providing individual therapy and family therapy.

We are currently looking for on call and full time MHPTs.

On Call MHPTs are primarily are scheduled in advance but may also receive short notice requests for coverage. This position will not be obligated to provide coverage on short notice.

The full time MHPTs will be scheduled for 40 hours a week. The set schedules are to be determined. The schedules may include weekends and evenings.

In this position, you will:

  • Be responsible for providing clinically therapeutic programs and treatment in the inpatient mental health units.

  • Under the supervision of the clinical supervisor and in collaboration with the patients Registered Nurse (RN), be responsible for providing various modalities of care, individual therapy, and treatment intervention with patients as agreed upon by the treatment team.

  • Use your education and training to assist in stabilizing and treating patients during their stay on the unit.

  • Provide feedback and input to the team regarding their assessment of the patients strengths, capacities, and responsiveness to the treatment.

  • In conjunction with the team, assist in discharge planning and interventions to support rapid stabilization and movement of the patient back into the community.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • One of the following:

  • A graduate degree in psychology, social work, or other mental health related field, who is licensed in their professional discipline, or working toward licensure to be completed within two (2) years of hire date

  • An Oregon licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Registered Nurse with a Master of Science in Nursing

  • A graduate degree in recreational therapy and seeking to complete a National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) within two (2) years of hire

  • A Therapist with a graduate degree in the Creative / Expressive Arts who is currently registered or eligible for registration within two (2) years of hire

  • A Bachelor’s prepared state certified alcohol and drug counselor

  • A State of Oregon licensed occupational therapist practicing within discipline standards and adhering to the State of Oregon Board standards for Occupational Therapy

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA-BLS) certification before hire, and re-certification every two (2) years

  • Knowledge and capacity to provide therapeutic solution-focused treatment to this population and in an acute care setting

  • Documented education, experience, and competence in identifying precipitating events; gathering histories of mental and physical disabilities, alcohol and drug use, past mental health services and criminal justice contacts; assessing family, social, and work relationships, conducting a mental status assessment; documenting a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnosis; writing and supervising a rehabilitation plan; and provide individual, family, and/or group therapy

  • One (1) year of experience with child / adolescent population

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Licensure from appropriate professional association / licensing board

  • One (1) year of experience in an inpatient mental health setting

  • One (1) year of experience with child / adolescent population in the inpatient setting
