Providence Health & Services School Outreach Intern - Summer 2017 in Newberg, Oregon
Providence is calling undergraduate senior level college or university students to summer internship opportunities within multiple departments in the Portland metro area which includes East and West Portland, Wilsonville, Hood River, and Newberg.
Preference is given to applicants who are in the first generation of their families to attend college. For the purposes of these internship opportunities, this is defined as the applicant’s parent/guardian has not earned a Bachelor’s degree.
General Internship Description:
Interns will be responsible for completing specifically identified health care or systems related projects. The projects will be varied and are based on the needs of the participating departments, health system and communities we serve. Interns will be provided preceptor support along with clearly defined expectations for assigned work. Further details regarding exact departmental responsibilities will be provided after applicant screening process, however the following are some of the areas where we anticipate there to be internship opportunities:
Public Health Events: Assist in the planning and implementation of community events.
Medical Informatics: Assist with various projects involved with organizing and reporting data.
Public Relations/Communications: Skills learned or developed will include interviewing, writing and editing; website posting and management; interpersonal communication; project management; and photo coordination, editing and archiving. Strong writing and communication skills required. English, journalism, communications, marketing majors strongly preferred.
Internships and School Outreach: Assist with career exploration programs including Surgical Viewings and Career Highlights; Assist with the internship program. Multiple opportunities available.
Electronic Medical Records: Engage with the Epic EMR to track and document patient records and current processes.
New Patient Customer Service: Engage with new patients to provide an exceptional Providence experience. Excellent communication skills required.
Emergency Response: Learn the operational aspects of the Lifeline program, communicate with subscribers. Located in Newberg, OR.
Providence Medical Group: assist with quality initiatives in a clinic setting. Requires strong organizational and verbal communications skills.
Providence Brain and Spine Institute: survey administration; data collection and entry for disease surveillance; and literature reviews for new population-based health studies. Interest in neuroscience preferred.
Operational Excellence: work with the portfolio management team on SharePoint site related projects.
Specialty Programs: assist project team in implementing and documenting standard workflows. Good communication skills required. Exposure to a range of specialty practices.
Emergency Management: participate in a project around data management of hospital services and emergency preparedness. Requires a flexible problem solver interested in disaster preparedness and response.
Vision Connection: work on program development related to Providence vision. Collaborate with a program sponsor, key stakeholder, and supporting departments.
Finance: gain understanding around the basics of the pricing and reimbursement models for a medical group as well as the various payment mechanisms that exist in the health care marketplace.
Nursing Administration: Assist with various tasks including data mining, writing and editing reports and documents, research policies.
Government Affairs: monitoring policy issues, research, and position papers.
Physical Facilities: work with various aspects of maintenance, construction, and operating a health care facility. Construction management or engineering majors strongly preferred.
Interns will not be providing direct patient care.

Length: One academic quarter/term 10-15 weeks. Maximum of 240 hours.
Time Commitment: Be available 2-5 days per week, per term
Work Hours: Dependent on department, business hours are typical. Less than 20 hours per week.
Pay: To be determined. Non-benefits eligible.
Start and end dates: June 26-Sept. 8, or once 240 hours have been completed.

Required qualifications for this position include:
High school diploma or equivalent and completion of 3 years of post-secondary education
Enrolled in and working towards a post-secondary education (Bachelor’s degree)
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Experience working or volunteering to address health disparities
1 year of customer service experience
Medical terminology coursework experience
