Providence Health & Services Mental Health Counselor - On Call in Beaverton, Oregon


Providence is calling an on call Mental Health Counselor (0.0 FTE, Rotating/Variable) to our Behavioral Health Telephone Triage center in Beaverton, OR.

This is an opportunity to assist callers with their urgent mental health and chemical dependency needs. Our on call mental health counselors are scheduled in advance and must be open to work all shifts, including overnights. Shifts are typically 12 hours long. On calls may also receive short notice requests for coverage but are not obligated to provide coverage.


In this position you will:

  • Work with clients in a fast paced, challenging multi-customer, telephone call center that operates 24/7.

  • Be responsible for the interactive process that occurs over the telephone with the client that assesses the nature and urgency of the client’s behavioral health needs and then determines appropriate disposition and/or services needed.

  • Provide mental health and chemical dependency intake services including assessment, crisis intervention, stabilization, and triage to the appropriate behavioral health program and/or services.

  • Coordinate admission of patients into Providence Health and Services Behavioral Health outpatient and inpatient programs.

  • Provide consultation and education to the healthcare team as well as to community agencies including the police, hospital, and school personnel regarding those persons experiencing mental health symptoms.

  • Work with complex insurance issues, obtains authorization for initial treatment on behalf of the client.

  • Accurately document the encounter with the client for continuity of care.

  • Be required to have proficiency using Microsoft Office products and multiple computer applications.

  • Be accountable for personal behavior and ongoing professional behavior and development.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master's degree in counseling, psychology, or social work

  • 2 years of post graduate experience working in mental health and/or chemical dependency

  • Experience/ knowledge of mental health, chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders

  • Working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office products, and electronic communication systems

  • Keyboarding 35 wpm

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Oregon license from a recognized licensing Board or eligibility for licensure

  • 3 years post graduate experience working in mental health and/chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders

  • Experience in a behavior health call center
